Not sure if this will help you, but they do make pneumatic decal and stripe removers. They have a rubber bladded wheel on them (smells good!!) and they work MINT on old, nicked pin striping. I think they cost like $130ish though....and thats if you have a compressor.

Re: Vinyl Stripe Nightmare

the pinstripe removers work great and are designed so not to damage the underling paint, Napa also sells decal remover in aerosol cans that works, so will brake fluid

Re: Vinyl Stripe Nightmare

I did a little looking at some of my favorite tool sites and came up with theses:

Cheaper one: Dent Fix Equipment DF701
The Stripper - Undercoating and Pin-Stripe Removal Air Tool http://www.thetoolwarehouse.net/shop/DFX-DF701.html

One the shop has: Dynabrade 18257
Dynazip Deluxe Kit http://www.thetoolwarehouse.net/shop/DYN-18257.html

I can't even describe how well the thing works, you can burn through two rubber disc on a good size boat though. Bit costly though...

On my boat I used a propane torch and a plasic edged blade. I heated the vinyl to the point of being soft, and it came right off. Took me less than a half hour to get it all off.

YES, brake fluid is very flamable......... I would try a heat gun before a torch, fiberglass will melt

LOL Aluminum boat ,,,I know it is flamable I was joking !! Put the brake fluid on...and yea it didn't budge...even scored it up abit to try and really get it in there...yea ..nope still nothing LOL I am thinking WWII flame thrower right about now........they are really brittle and weathered. I am wondering if the wheel is the way to go or not......I am thinking more along the line of chemicals???

Re: Vinyl Stripe Nightmare

If the stripes are as brittle as you say, try using a gasket
scraper. I used one on my old boat project and you
should have seen the decals lying on the floor in little
tiny shards of aged vinyl! Works quickly too.

Just be careful to use the right angle when pushing the
blade through or you may gouge the aluminum. Too steep - it will gouge, too shallow and it will glide right over the vinyl.

Also, try grinding the outer corners of the gasket
scraper to a radius so it doesn't gouge the aluminum
hull with the corners of the scraper.
