vin# decode site?

i need to know ware to get my vin decoded online for a merc. i also dont know if its a 2 or 4 stoke. its 80hp

right here would be a good start.or you can try, the marine doctor, it,s a site run by a merc mechanic .

the serail # is 5772748. all info i could get would be great. again how can i tell 4 or 2 stroke?

ithink you got a 1981 80 hp 4 cylinder 2-stroke merc.meaning you mix the gas at a ratio of 50:1 with 2 stroke oil.

If you have to mix oil with the gas, you most likely have a 2 stroke (there are a few oil injected 2 strokes though) If you are SURE you don't have to mix oil with the gas, you have a 4 stroke.

in my merc manual serial numbers starting at 5582562 and up are 1981.1982 starts at 6232941,thus 1981 2 stroke merc.

Yep, cougar is right, I believe. You have an 81 2 stroke.

I don't think any 4 stroke outboards were made back then? Or were there some?

honda ,im not 100 percent positive but i dont think merc ever made a 80 hp 4stroke,i think it was and is 75 then 90 or 115? the honda was a small hp motor at that time.
