Someone got all my gas although maybe not a bad thing as the gas was old. All I can say is I hope it fouls up their fuel system. What do you guys do to keep the gas thieves away.

Re: Victim of theft

Since I can't afford to keep much in there I figure the up side is they can't steal what isn't there.

Seriously though, a good point. I saw a gizmo the other day on TV (one of the fishing shows) like a spider leg deal you slip in the fill and it won't let someone stick a siphon hose in there.

My first thought was that most of the theives would probably cut the hose at the motor and pull it out that way. But a shut off would cure that if it was hidden and the theives didn't want to take the time or make the noise.

I guess if they're gonna get it, they're gonna get it.

Re: Victim of theft

my boat stays locked in the garage and my truck has a locking cap.

I heard the other day about a guy having gas cans dissapearing from the back of his truck so he left one in there with a full dose of sugar. he figured whoever was taking it deserved a cup of sugar as well..... :D

Re: Victim of theft

A few months ago I too was a victim of fuel theft. My boat is older and at first I thought the electric gauge on the bridge was acting up. There's a mechanical gauge built into the float on top of each tank, so when I went down to verify the level I discovered that the bridge gauge was correct. My Silverton has twin tanks and they pulled about 60 gallons from each side. The officer who wrote the report told me it was just about impossible to charge someone unless they're caught red-handed. My marina doesn't have security cameras- yet. I had to cancel 2 weekend trips after that because we didn't have the gas (or the cash) to go. It sucked big time.
I called Silverton to inquire about locking caps and discovered my fills were custom made for the 34C and nobody makes a compatable locking cap. To deter any future attempts, I searched around and found those "spiders" that Dhadley mentioned that fit into the fill hose. Pretty nifty but pricey. The only way it'll happen now is if they take the time to unbolt the float flange (my fill hoses are buried behnd fiberglass bulkheads).

I'm really surprised that gas hasn't started disappearing in our cars when it spiked right after Katrina. We've really had no problems around this neck of the woods.
Bicycles are a different story. Seem a few of the younger teenagers have a chop shop inthe neighborhood.

someone recently use a clamp on the fill hose, so the siphon hose would not fit.

Re: Victim of theft

I heard stories out of Florida where gas thieves used a sharp punch and simply stabbed the fuel tank on cars and let the fuel run into a container. My pontoon sat outside all summer and I was worried about losing fuel as well but had no problem. Considered an electric fuel shut-off solenoid but never got around to it.
