Putting my 4.3 back together.... Check out my photo. I have about 3/4 of an inch space between the inside of the dampener and the face of the timing chain cover. It looks excessive to me. I torqued it to spec, but it looks like it's hanging out there a long way. Thoughts?

measure the depth and the distance to the crank land where the damper sits.

you dont state what year 4.3 you have, however with V-belts, its a 95 or earlier.

It's 1989. I'm looking through the front pulley. It looks like there is no "land".

you need to pull the damper to measure

there is no way to see the land on the crank with the damper installed and looking thru the hole.

the front end of the crank has the large bearing journal, then it steps down a bit, then is machined down for the snout. the end of the snout is the landing for the damper.

and as BT indicated, if you are not using a damper installation tool, you wont ever get it seated. you also will strip the bolt threads out of the end of the crank, resulting in you pulling the motor to remove the crank
