Was at the lake last week, running at very high speed and the power steering belt broke. The boat turned 90 degrees left instantly. The G force did a number on everyone in the boat, surprised no one went over the side. I was able to throttle back quickly and avoid disaster. I carry 2 spare alt belts but no spare power steering belts so had to drive it 2 miles back to marina with out p/s. It pulled very hard left getting on plane, then darted right when I throttled back. Very hard to drive. Anyway, got it home and installed new p/s belt and when I started the starboard engine the steering ram and stern drives started oscillating back and forth violently, shook the whole boat. Anyone have a clue what might have happened? 1987 chris Craft stinger 312, twin 460 fords, omc cobra stern drives, and volvo penta power steering ram.

Re: Very puzzling steering issue

NC,

Maybe your power steering pump is bad and that's why your the belt broke. Could be the power steering pump bearings are seizing. You might have low fluid level or air in your system also.
