Re: very dumb question

Water level being over the top cap and dipstick of the drive isn't really that big a deal, it's sealed. The big problem is water above the steering shaft which is not water tight, and will leak into the boat.

Don, where is the steering shaft located?

Any pics of this?

And I'm not lazy, I'm actually going to find it in the manual as well. I'm just trying to get some visuals on everything. I don't mind doing the research. THANK YOU for the pic. Now, I just need to see where the steering arm is and go from there. Krazy

In this pic you can see where the steering yoke goes vertically up into the transom shield. So if the water is up above the Black bumper, which is about where the shaft is, you could take on water like Don mentioned.

You aren't going to find anything in any Volvo manuals unless you have the old installation manuals.

Here is a picture that help explains it, even though it is a 290 and not a 270 drive. Same basics.
The blue line is where Volvo likes to the the design water line when the boat is new. This also keeps the exhaust system high enough above the water line that water doesn't back up the exhaust and hydrolock the engine.

The arrow is point to the steering pivot shaft where it goes up into the transom shield. You don't want your water line above the tip of the blue arrow in my picture.

Here is a picture that shows how to paint the bottom paint above the water line.

Volvo must've given up on some applications then. The higher the deadrise and the heavier the boat, with single application, will result in deeper installs than the 20 ft. Bayliner pic I posted. Has to. Only solution is higher X dimension which is not always possible either. Twins solve a lot of this of course.

They didn't give up, they had plans for that too, called extensions.

And that confirms one of my rules of life. If it doesn't make sense there is missing information. Cool

Don't be so smug:rolleyes:. My boat was available with a four cylinder and an 8 cylinder motor, mines got the eight. That's a huge difference in weight.

I never had any leak in my boat.

I wasn't being smug. I was simply noting where the water is. I think that indicates, uh, where the water is. No offense intended whatsoever
