Has anyone used this product ? It is supposed to remove oxidation and then a sealer is applied to prevent future oxidation. According to their ad, it is superior to waxes because it is able to penetrate the fine holes in the gelcoat which they claim regular waxes will not do.

I would be leary of anything that wanted to "peneyrate my gelcoat" , if its really oxidised the best thing for it is a power buffer and some light rubbing compound. then worry about the wax

Re: Vertglas?

Used it 2 years ago and was not overly impressed. Personally I have had very good luck with the 3M brand finishes.

OK then, I am going to stick with the tried and true, rubbing compound and teflon wax. It sounded to me like the product claims were a little too far reaching.

Re: Vertglas?

I used it a few years ago, it is easy to use. If you put enough coats on, it looks pretty good.

It reminded my of acrylic floor wax.

Actually buy buffing and waxing you are truly sealing your gel coat ensuring it a long and shiny future. I truly believe if there was a product that could seal the orignal product it would have been used long ago touting the durability if there finishes...... aka big money..... :D

Re: Vertglas?

4 years ago I bought the kit for my boat. The oxidation remover works great. It removes the old waxes and anything else that is on it. The finish itself with multiple coats made my old finish look new again. The coats are quick and easy. Usually by the time you have finished one coat, the place you started is dry.

After the finish is on, it does not leave a slick smooth feeling like wax does. The first year, it looked great about all season. Towards the end of the season however it was getting spotty looking. Mainly the areas that the sun concentrates on.

What I found when areas become faded again, you cannot just apply it over again. The whole boat needs stripped of the old finish. They make a stripper for the removal of the old finish and it works well. It is a pain to go through the steps over and over again, especially if you have a large boat to do like me.

My first 4 years of using it, my boat did look great. I tried different waxes. They worked but did not hold up as long as the Vertglas did.

Another draw back to this stuff is that you cannot wax over it.

Would I use it again? Maybe on a smaller boat, but not anything over 20'. Just too much work for the bigger craft.

Re: Vertglas?

I've heard many getting good results from it. It's only around $80-100 to apply. The bad news is it only lasts a year.

Re: Vertglas?

well first off this isn't something you would do to a boat unless you have really bad oxidization. i had a fair amount on my boat and it does get rid of it that's for shure.the trick to using the oxidization remover is to keep it wet and spend time at it . they suggest a mist bottle to keep it damp. i upgraded to a garden hose mister and kept it damper . the scrubber is awesome for this job. your gel will look really bad after the boat wash step is completed. but it should be evenly dull not patchy, (don't let your boat dry in the sun this will make it streaky)if its patchy or streaky keep working at it till its evenly dull when dry (that's very important). reason being is that the finish step wont hide or clean that up.your going to get water streaks if you do any of this in the sun or if you let it dry anytime between the start of the process till the end of the wash step . the finish goes on really easy.i found it worked well to apply it length wise and then the next coat up and down ,then lengthwise again and so on. after the first two coats your gonna wonder if you did it wrong but after 5-6 coats it looks really nice from about 2 feet away
this product doesn't repair or bring it back to new condition. but if its bad this will make it look nice. not amazing or like new but nice . i would say it worked well for me and ill do it again only ill spend more time getting the patchiness out.i have chrome striping all over my boat and it didn't harm it at all.the surface on the swim platform is far nicer to walk on than when its waxed. as well i don't think i could have gotten this shine from a wax on my gel.But again if you don't have oxidization problems don't use this stuff! you'll find wax will be better. If you dont know if your boat has oxidization or not than this isnt the product for you ,try a wax first
a 21 foot boat with a cabin should be a 2 evening job.get to the boat to the evenly dull stage and apply the finish the next evening don't work in the sunlight, even though they say you can , youll be sorry. i did mine under a roof. i spent a good 5 hrs at it but sould have spent 8. im happy with the end result for now. my boat is 16 yrs old in oct after all.
any questions just ask.
