Re: Verterans

I was in the Army from 86 to 88. I went in as an e-2 and came out as an e-1! I was a er, "discipline" problem. But I got an honorable discharge!
I was sent to Germany for my permanent duty station, and the beer there was just too hard to resist. I think the 2 years in the Army were the funnest 2 years of my life.

Chief, with this post, make that non-vets count 3.

Since this post is a collection of those who have server....

-THANK YOU- to all who have served, are serving, and will serve. I salute you (including our friends Down Under). No matter the branch of service, war or peace, front lines or other... -THANK YOU-

My path through life did not lead me into the Service, and in some ways I regret that, but it wasn't the path I was to take.

I just returned home a few minutes ago from a trip back to my hometown and stumbled across this thread and had to post. The trip "home" was for the funeral of my Uncle who passed away Thursday. He was one of our few remaining WWII vets.

From the song "Another old Soldier" by Mark Collie....
Twenty-one guns, stars and stripes
Eye full of tears and a heart full of pride
When you hear that distant bugle play. . .
Another old soldier fades away. . .

Re: Verterans

to Dogsdad.
I may have introduced an incorrcet term, or used a term incorrectly.
When I was in the mob 68-77,in our Army (NZ) a veteran was a service-person who had been posted to a theatre of war and served in that theatre of war.
I understand the Brits and Aussies have exactly the same definitions at the time.
Maybe the term "Veteran" was not an official term even them, just one loosley used.
Today I think the term Veteran may apply to a person who has served in the Armed Forces. In Aussie, the Govt Dept called Veteran Affairs is there for not only ex soldiers who have been to war theatres but for all ex service-people who have need of support.
Maybe I should ask the question:

Who amoung us have served in a theatre of war.

I somehow think there is a lot of us.
Cheers
Phillip

Re: Verterans

The VFW is a seperate group, I'm a war veteran and I don't belong to that bunch. I might join them someday, but the VFW is more for social gatherings and is in no way associated with the military. As far as I know. ;)
I always thought that "veterans" served and participated in wars. Maybe "war veteran" is the more correct term.

Re: Verterans

to belong to the VFW you must have served in the military in a foreign war. You do not have to belong and is social but also political and provides services to veterans including funerals.
