found the po had done some repairs. the floor came out in one piece as it was just layed in and resined over but i was amazed to find that the board under the gas tank was plaster board that had been glassed over.

shes a mess but i have some left over stuff from my last rebuild so its time to measure up and tear down. i wonder what other surprisses the po left in there :)

Re: venture 16 bassboat

well the plaster board turned out to be pink bondo.....lots of the stuff over half inch thick in places they must have used a bucket of the stuff. found it intresting that the mat on top of the bondo was pure white like it had never had resin on that side. i guess that the bondo stole the resin from the mat as the other side looked like glass should. well found my first puzzle i need help with. the stringers are a odd shape i made a sketch of what i think they are. the whole boat looks like it was done with a chop gun so its hard to find the edge where wood stops and hull begins and a lot of the floor is the hull so im having to be carefull

does this sketch look about right

drawing.jpgstringer small.jpg

red is hull, green is real thin wood?, light green use to be wood but in the test hole its slime now, yellow is the bottom of the bilge (not sure whats under that but its real soft so im thinking wood)

Re: venture 16 bassboat

other wierd thing is the transom doesnt come to the sides but just angles up. i havent cut the pocket out yet so you can see the way it doesnt follow the rear like most transoms do

Looks like your stringers had "nailers" fastened to the top of them to make it easier to fasten down the decking. I don't think it would huurt anything to go with a thicker stringer material.

I think I'd go back with a full width transom, I think it would be stronger.

Re: venture 16 bassboat

at what thickness do you guys think that wood is used for strenth rather than as a form to shape the glass. 1-3/4 wide 1/2" thick including the glass layed wide side horizontal against a pleat in the hull. it seems like its there to level that part for the floor but its so thin that im wondering if it worth drilling to find out whats inside or if the real thick glass (looks like chop gun) is enoght for surport so what ever is under it is there to add a shape. i can not realy see 3/8th ply being that structual in the vertical. i have another thats 1-3/4 by 3/4 in the same design on the next pleat that was under the foam they look in real good condition im just wondering if i should try to drill a inspection hole to see whats in there. its almost like removing a runner made of wood to replace it with a foam one when the glass is still good.

yep the transom will have to be redesigned as i dont have a chop gun so i can not reglass it the way it is. at one point theres a 1" gap under the transom just above the drain hole so theres no way to get mat in there. as for the stringers i will measure the live well that goes between them and if theres no conflict i will uses thicker material. im seeing alot of problems with hand laying a boat that wasnt designed to be built that way as theres no where to to get the 4" strip required to glass a stringer in. a lot of the pieces have 1" gaps between them so i either have to close the gaps or think about a diffrent approach

Geeze, when I get bored I take the boat out, or watch tv, or get on iboats. Seeing this I'm starting to feel inadequate.

Hope it's ok if I tag along. Carry on, please.

lol im on call every few weeks so i have to stay sobber and close by the plant. wife always finds a reason to go out that weekend so i get bored and play in the yard. so dont be to surprissed if i do alot of work then go silent for a few weeks as there the weeks im free to go fishing and other stuff plus i havent told the wife im rebuilding the boat i dodged that by telling her that i was removing the insides to make it lighter and cheaper at the dump......i did tell her months ago that if i ever did another boat she should shoot me so im not telling her what im up to

i promise to post more pics this time

Re: venture 16 bassboat

been digging some of the foam out and a quick rinse so i can see how things are connected. i drilled the thin wood pieces and there full of mush so im proberly adding that to my to do list. im not planning on making a 25 year boat out of this as i plan to use and abuse this one in some very shallow water so im thinking of a little extra strenth in the hull wont hurt. i plan to remove the rear live well and make that a drinks cooler. i just need to test the 12v cooler i was given years ago to see if it can keep a few drinks cold in the florida sun then i will foam out the live well and fit the cooling unit and fan (at least that the plan). either way i will fill in the rear live well drain.

foam out back.jpg foam out front.jpg foam out.jpg

in case you are wondering i work outside so i cut the stringers so the boat can drain. it also shows the original design

Where there's a will, there's a way! I'm sure you'll find a fairly craftsmanlike soloution to your glassing challanges. Just because they used a chop gun to build the boat doesn't mean you can't fix it without one on the resto.

I'm sure you'll do a better job by hand than they did on the production line.

Re: venture 16 bassboat

looks like im going to have to remove all the insides including any good parts so i can get the area needed to glass it back in then add the parts in the right order so more important things get a good grip of the hull and less important things get a grip on the more important things. lmao that proberly makes no sense at all. in simple form i can not put all the wood in as theres a lot of parts all close together then glass over them in one go, so stringers first then chamfer wood to go against stringers and glass to hull and stringers. i think they built the boat by throwing wood in and chop gunning it then add some more wood and more chop till the boat was done then foamed and carved into the right shape then more chop over the foam. i dont think its going to be hard to redo just a pain that theres no markers in the layers when grinding to show when you are on the hull so i will have to be carefull to find all the edges.
