I was playing with the idea of shipping my boat to Venice, Italy to use on a vacation . Do I need a License to operate my boat there? And would the boat need to be registered there to be legal to use? I doubt I would ever go through with this but I am curious and the knowledge might come in handy someday. Likewise if I bought a Orkney boat in UK is it able to be registered in USA ?

No idea on Italy. Best guess is a lot of hoops where just renting a boat there might be tons easier (and cheaper).

As for importing a boat....check with your registering authority first. Be that DMV/BMV, dept of interior/fisheries/whatnot. Find out what paperwork/forms they want.

Then....go to customs and find out what they want. Go in person (if practical) and find out what they want to import the boat. Along with any fees, etc.
