Been gone for awhile, now divorce #4 is over and done,so back to me and my boat. Old 69 luhrs 25, and I need to bond luan to plywood for "faux" mahogany plywood that it was built with originally. Also need any info I can get on doorskin quality luan because the stuff at the big box stores sucks. Thanks Springer

Most middle size cities and larger cities have stores specializing in plywood. They have products not available at Home Depot and Lowes.

They can guide you to the right way to do the job. When a boat gets wet, sometimes the cheap route is not the best way to go.

Hey again,
I'm not talking about cheap so much as I am about not being able to find or afford the Phillipean mahogany that it was made with originally, this is a cabin cruiser type of boat. So , with that in mind I am looking at doing this on the interior like the dinette area, the walls between the V-birth and the salon, the dinette table itself, and the galley cabinet that holds the stove ect. There is no way I can afford to use solid or mahogany plywood for this, it's just to darn expensive. I have already done a couple of test pieces using the cheap stuff from lowes, and I couldn't believe that cheap-a*# luan when stained with a "red oak" stain looked as good as any finished mahogany on more expensive boats.I will be finishing it with Eppifanes or similar product for water resistance and finish. The rest of the boat, gunnels, decking, cabin sole, outside of cabin will be white gel coat just like before. By the way I'm using poly not epoxy.

Poly resin without CSM is basically worthless. Once fully cured it will Crack. The resin has no binders in the mix and requires the fibers in the CSM to hold it together. Epoxy on the other hand does have binder in the resin and does not require anything to keep it from cracking. If you only coat your wood with poly resin you will be highly dissappointed with the long term results. You'd be much better off just using the Epiphanes only.

Hey wood,
I mean That I'm using poly to bond or laminate it with csm just like transom bonding ect.Have been on iboats for couple of years and watched you and Yacht Dr, Opps, and all of you more knowlgeable guys for a long while now. Can't tell you how much I have learned from all of you guys. I have restored so many things in my 38+ years of automotive & home stuff that I sometimes feel like Rick Dale from the show American Restoration. Ironicly my first name is Dale, Sringer is my "biker" name given to me years ago from my "bros". Other related question was about my choice of plywood, have heard that Arauco is not the best thing to use for this type of project. Do you or anybody have anythingfor me on that? By the way I'm so surprised that nobody hacked on the 4th divorce part of this thread. That's gotta get some kinda comedy stuff going. hahahaha

OH, Ok, you should be good to go then. I never meddle with marriage stuff. I learned a long time ago that I know NOTHING when it comes to that. I let my wife figure that out!!!:D Any time you're gunna laminate like you're planning on it's always a good bet to use Epoxy. It's about the best glue there is for wood boat stuff.

Have you thought about Veneering your ply ?

I did a large CC with ply and Veneer (teak). Im sure mohogany would be available in rolls.

Its simple to apply after your ply is prepped ( fill all the holes and edges ). Use Contact cement.
