Has anyone had experience with Velvet Drive Transmissions? I recently rebuilt my 350 Mercruisers. When reinstalled, the starboard transmission clunks and rattles when it goes into gear. It did not do this before I took it out. Could it be an alignment issue? It looks good. They are early 1970 version 2.57:1. Any help is appreciated.

Those transmissions will be the first to tell you if your engine isn't running smoothly. If it rattles and knocks at idle, but quiets down if you bump the rpms up, then your engine isn't idling smoothly. Try moving your idle up and see if it quiets down. What is happening is the planetary gears are shaking and rattling.

Thanks for the input. It does settle down when I raise the RPM's. It is still noisy going in and out of gear.

That really sounds like a destroyed damper/coupler on the flywheel. If the springs are totally shot it will clunk loudly when put into gear. Then rough idle or power imbalance between the two engines will cause a rattling sound. The plates rarely fail altogether.
