Has anyone installed Velocity Stacks on their 150 Merc. I have purchased a set from Bob's and am about to install them. I have to remove the carb box and put louvers in the cowling for them to work properly. I was told that the increased airflow would lean out my engine and burn a piston. If this is true is one jet size bigger enough. What are your experiences using the stacks? Everything else is stock. My Merc is a 1994 model 150 hp.<br /><br />Thanks in advance

Great way to go for racing. But to my mind, for the average boat user...why look for a way to cram dirty air into your $$$$$$$ motor?<br /> Just wondering'<br />DHPMARINE

Re: Velocity Stacks

The only problem I had when I ran those pipes are the police. We ran them on a small hydro and could get one ride across the lake. The cops would show up at the ramp and put there lights on and call us in. Those pipes are so loud. I think there louder than a AA-Nitro car. A stack outboard engine sound great some dont see the humor. Sometimes people called the cops befor we got to the lake. We would be at the ramp ready to launch and the cops would kick us off the lake. We gave up on the stack outboard engines and went to Jet drives with blowers. We ran open headers with tip coolers. The cops didnt like thoses boats either.

I think you're confusing "velocity stacks" on the intakes, with a "stacker" exhaust.<br /><br />-W

Re: Velocity Stacks

Im not confusing anything clams. When I raced mod e's we call that a stack engine. We used the term velocity stack or a stacked engine. Its called an oxymoron. Its like a snowmobile. The aftermaket exhaust that takes out the muffler is called a silencers. Im not confused about that either. I look at your web site its seems those tower of powers dont make alot of horsepower. Its seems like they are a dying breed. I play with Yamahas HPDI that make real suds. I used to play with thoses tower of power but thought they were down on steam(they have such small pistons). I guess its like working on antique bikes.

Most states will nail you for no spark arrestor........ Better put an extra engine on there so you can outrun them like "Gator McCluskey"...gk.gk.gk....

Re: Velocity Stacks

I'm basing my call on the fact that he described *intake* mods when describing the installation of his "stacks". Context is everything. <br /><br />Yes, I'm familiar with what we called "stackers" regarding the stacked exhaust. Again, context led (leads) me to believe *he* was talking about an intake mod - not exhaust. <br /><br />The Tower of Power still makes as much or more HP per cubic inch (and by the pound) as anything on the water. Yes, they are getting a bit "long in the tooth" but still rule in the 115 - 150hp range. <br /><br />As I recall, a Merc 1500 won the Formula V finals this year. Just one poor 30 year old little inline against all that new tech stuff. It almost doesn't seem fair. :D :D <br /><br />So, in the "under 100 ci" divisions, they remain untouchable. In the case of my new boat, I unbolted the new 115 Jonnyrude it came with (good package deal), and bolted on my '87 inline. And gained 4 mph and a better hole shot. <br /><br />Their day is over when we say it's over. :D <br /><br />-W<br /><br />

Hey, I'm trying to install Bob's velocity stacks, on a 1983 Merc 150 Black Max. Could you share your experience with me ? I have'nt removed the plate yet because I'm not sure how to attach the brackets for the clam shell. Did you have jetting issues? When I ordered the plates, I had a pretty long conversation with Kevin, about how they should be installed. He did not mention jetting. This motor is stock, and runs great. I bought a 1983 Baja 184 HLS, in unbelievable condition, and this motor was the original engine. I definately do not want to burn it up !! Incidentaly, I'm a mechanical idiot, so any advice you offer will be passed on to the proffessional I use to have the work done.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Velocity Stacks

Stacks on any kinda stocker are a waste of time and money. They do look cool though. Will not make one iota of anthing other than extra reed noise. Even on a lite weight stem winder ya can't tell by tha "seat of your pants" feelin'. But if you do it anyway..................

Most factory carb V6's are a tad rich anyway but one size on tha mains won't hurt. Put 'em in, make some passes and take some plug readings, decide for yourself.....................JMO

BTW, cops ain't gonna say squat 'bout "Velocity Stacks"..............

Re: Velocity Stacks

Thanks for your responses. I appreciate you all taking the time to give some advice. I certainly don't plan to race this boat, but I think the stacks look so cool, that I want to install them, or have them installed professionally.

The problem I have is that the tapped and threaded stacks do not seem to match any bolts on my clamshell brackets, which I need to cover the engine. Has anyone installed Bob's stacks on a motor of this vintage, and if so how ? Did you fabricate a bracket ? Or am I missing something in the installation process ?

Incidentally, the technician at Bob's said that 90% of the people who install these velocity stacks do NOT have to jet the carbs. Kevin, (at Bob's) was surprised to find out that fitting was a problem. He indicated they have been selling the stacks since, the late 70"s or early 80's, and that there is only one model.

If anyone knows the secret to installing them please help.

THanks again for all your responses.

Just use tha "bottom" bracket bolted to tha carbs (stacks). Tha top won't match, without some fabracation, let it float. Just make sure your spring loaded latches are "tight".
I usually cut tha front of tha 150 cowls like tha 200 and use tha single, big plasic latch and not worry 'bout tha top........................

Re: Velocity Stacks

Mine's loud enough as it is. Especially considering the noise is directed at the boat instead of away.

Re: Velocity Stacks

I myself would fool with em as (1) no hp increase and (2) no one can see em unless cowling is off!!!!
