[Deadwood]

Didn't even try to put the Starchief in the water. The Umpqua was brown (with tree size debris hoofing it down river) due to substantial rain. Struck out crabbing from the docks. Since the river puked the bay with dirty water the little pinchers apparently sidled their butts back out to saltier environs.
Not familiar with the lakes in the area yet but might be a good future option.
Anyway thought I'd share a couple snapshots. The lighthouse is awesome at night especially with some fog about. It has a Fresnel lens which is quite spectacular.

Watched the Coast Guard play at the Bar.
The triangle area is where oysters are farmed via suspension on ropes. Check out http://www.umpquaoysters.com/ Treated my companions to some too.
Definitely ain't Florida, Kev or Mexico, Barato but the conditions didn't stop us from having a great week.

Wow that's one angry sea you guys contend with over there...and I thought Lake Huron gets rowdy

The CG seems to be conducting routines to convince the recruits that those ships can handle all the inlet can dish out!

I would like to learn how to handle a boat in surf like that.
I think there was a show on the history channel that said the CG train all of there rescue swimmers in that area.

Gezzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz that looks like one of the ( better ) days. I saw at the Seattle boat show a few years ago a Sea going Row boat going in over the bar and the wave behind him was well over 40 ft. He made it in. Came all the way from Japan.

I've been in some stuff that looks like that only much smaller. I like a nice 3-4' swell, but not too much more than that(unless I was on that CG ship).

The waves make that CG ship look small, my SS would be unseen down in a swell half the time

That is some awsome surf that is for sure and there is no way I would try that ever again. Was in a 32ft boat in some stuff like that and it scared the crap out of me. It was a friends boat and a storm caught us out and had to come in. One of his buddies was a retired CG captain and he took the helm, and the first thing he told us to do was put on life jackets and have things handy in case we went down. Then we called the CG and told them the story and it was not long before a CG cutter was there and escorted us in. We followed the cutter in as it cut us a path, we were right on the tail of the cutter while going through the breaking surf. I am betting we were no more than 20 feet off of the stern of the cutter, that was a scary ride and I hated everything about it.

we were watching one of those CG cutters do maneuvers at La Push one day....that is one seriously badazz TIN BOAT! the acceleration they can muster is just scary, and i think they were turning it 180 in its own length.

i have nothing but respect for the military (dad was career Army with service in Korea and Nam) but those CG folks too often get forgotten in that calculus....they really have got major cojones. consider that they're often doing "battle" with a force that has more power than the old USSR, al-quaeda, etc all combined.....and unlimited reinforcements....and no concern about winning hearts & minds....and less mercy than a concentration camp guard. the sea is a rough teacher....if you survive, you learn the lesson :-o

thank you for not subjecting your boat to that or risking the loss of your valued input here....those pics make me appreciate the Sea of Cortez more....

Don't have to worry about me or anyone else trying to get out there. The CG had the bar shut down to ALL vessels (except themselves obviously). The next day it had quieted down enough for the commercial guys to get in and out. It'll have to be pretty friggin flat for me to venture out there and this time of year it don't happen. Even when it's nice the CG may shut it down. That's what pisses the local guides off in summer and fall. Don't bother me though...that river is big and long and pretty much waveless. The downside to fishing the river only is that you only get a shot at Umpqua River Salmon. Out in the ocean you can get salmon heading for the Umpqua, Coquille, Suislaw, Rogue, Chetco, Klamath....you get the idea.

Hats off to the Coast Guard You know of course that some of there inland based boats are designed to roll completly over and keep on going. I'v seen training film and on Discovery Channel a time or two. It take a dedicated Fool do do this but thats what the Coast Guard does and rescue helicopters.

"Crossing the Bar" has got to be the single most dangerous thing a boater could do. Sure glad I don?t have to do that to go fishing. I think I would have to take up golf. Glad to hear you made it home safely as I have heard many stories of others that have not. Seems every year that someone gets into trouble and the results aren?t good.

a lot of the openings to the Pacific from west coast of Baja involve bar crossings, often hairy but nothing like that....and no 50 degree water temps either. OTOH, no CG to rescue yo butt or tell you when it's not safe to go out.......i think i'll try to do my learning there, and in the portabote rather than the Starchief.

The '75 starcraft american i had came with a blown 135johnny and a story about 5-6 waves on one of the great lakes so a 20'+ tinny with a closed bow should take that with no problems. Anyone gana let me use one.

If I was closer Id let you use my 22 ft Holiay with a 200 Johnson ONLY if you left me with a check for the boat and Paid any damage if you survived. LOL I was refering to cross the Columbia River bar on a tide change. You would have tio see the Coast Guard training film. To see what I mean. You would never make it unless you were very very lucky.

Thought I'd share a couple of shots from the last trip a few weeks back around Tsunami time. The river was still running to high and dirty to even try to float her but the younger son and I did traverse a smaller one in hopes of steelhead...alas.....no fish but a good time was had by all!
(Also some shots of our brief trip down the coast to some amazing rock formations being pounded by huge surf.)
