Varnish or epoxy?

I'm replacing the plywood on my aluminum transom. It's exterior grade plywood, no voids, and I painted it with 4 coats of spar varnish. I read quite a few recommandations here for epoxy/resin. Anything wrong with having used varnish?

The wood on a small aluminum boat is an easy replacement. What the heck.....leave it and go fishing. Many years ago ....... spar varnish was the coating. You should be fine.

with epoxy you have to varnish every year anyway so - the only place i would really recommend epoxy would be if you had made a wood mounting board where the bottom of it would be wet the whole time.
