Vapor Lock in Evinrude?

I think I'm developing a vapor lock on my 1998 Evinrude Intruder. I can unscrew the fuel line at the motor and it will start working. My mechanic told me he doesn't know of anyway to fix the problem. Any ideas?

It's on a 284 Stratos and has a dedicated vent that is open. I unscrew the fuel line where it connects to the engine just above the VRO and it seems to solve the problem until I stop to fish for awhile, then when I try to open the throttle it dies. It cranks and idles fine, just bogs down when I open the throttle. I've been told this is called heat soak and was bad on these motors.

Sounds like heat soak. What you could try is when you start it up after sitting let it idle for a time to wet down the carbs and then when to take off try feathering the choke a little.

I've let it idle and it does nothing to help. I have to choke by pushing in my key. I also do not have a hot foot so it's kinda awkward to open the throttle and try to feather the choke with the key but I'll try anything that might help.

If this is a 60 degree 150, replace the small vapor pump on the vapor seperator tank.

Check the anti- siphon valve at the fuel tank. Do a vacuam -pressure test on the fuel system. A vapor lock in an outboard would be very uncommon. The under hood temp's are just not hot enough.

The 60? is known for this heat soak problem ,that why it has a vapor seperator. When engine is shut down it emptys of water causing heat to seek the coolest areas which are the engine front half and carbs. This cause the fuel to boil off into a vapor and it is more problematic with todays fuel additives and ethanol blended fuel. Several updates from 19991 and address the problems for this but there is no cure untill outside temp go down. The E-rudes where the more prone engines due to the dark paint which increased under cowl temps. Several of the factory off the wall updates where: jet size change/opening mixture needle 1-1/2 turn extra turn out, adding cowl drains from the ficht.

I haven't run any ethanol gas in it in over a year, and the oil mixer is disconnected so I can mix it myself. I've been told I'll just have to live with it. I'm gonna try some of your suggestions this weekend.

Thanks for all the suggestons. I was able to figure it out this week. I had to adjust a screw on top of the flywheel. It was suggested by a mechanic and though I'm not sure what it does, it worked.

Can you tell me the fix I have the same problem I have 150 intruder 1995 model please help

I found the fuel filter where it screws into the fuel system nut was cracked could this do it
