V6 135 stator 2wire old/4 wire new

I have purchased a replacement quicksilver stator for my v6 135 1989, the old stator has 2 yellow charge wires (part No398-9610a3) and the new one has four yellow wires, (part No 398-9610a19) this is the new superseeded part,it has two short yellow wires and two long with a tie wrap around the long ones,the reg it connects to has two connections,does anyone know which wires to jump together please and thank you,the unit was old stock and has no leaflet with it. many thanks in advance.

Your original stator is a 40 amp single coil, and the new one is 40 amp dual coil. Up until now they have not been considered interchangable. One is for the water cooled monster you have, and the other drives 2 20 amp regulators with the outputs wired in parallel.

That said, there's no reason I can see that they cannot be wired in parallel if the windings are accurate, and they should be.

If the wires have a distinct marking indicating polarity, such as a stripe on one wire of each pair, then connect them so the markings match. If they are plain yellow, then you'll have to determine polarity.

To determine correct polarity:
1. connect one wire from each pair together. It can be on 1 screw to the voltage regulator. Leave the other two wires free. Connect an AC voltmeter set to 100 V or so between the two free wires.
2. Start the engine.
>>>If the meter indicates no voltage, or a very low voltage, polarity is correct. You can connect those two wires to the other regulator terminal.
>>> If the meter indicates significant voltage, (I would expect about 30 V at idle), then polarity is reversed. Reverse the connections on either pair of wires.

Be sure you know what you're doing. If you hook them up backward, you can quickly burn out the stator.

Vice admiral, you are a star,many thanks,i'l do that after lunch and let you know the outcome,the wires are not marked,but they are A.C arnt they?? would they still have polarity then? but I will follow your instructions exactly and appreciate and admire your cleverness.thank you so much again.

It isn't polarity as you think of DC + and -, it is the AC 'phase' must be in sync or the voltage doubles. Like your house uses two 110 AC line that are 180 degrees out of phase so that when you run the 2 lines together for the stove, drier, and furnace, you get 220 between them.

John spelled out a very simple method of determining when you have the correct pair by reading the voltage.

I need to remember this, another proof of the K.I.S.S. principle.

This alternator has 12 poles and 12 magnets, any one coil will either be in phase or exactly 180? out of phase. Put the o-scope away, an AC meter is all you need.

Big thing here is if you hook up AC circuits out of phase, you wind up with a high powered circle jerk that can be downright destructive.

J_Martin and Charlie B, thank you so much,you are obviously electrical minded wizards!!,I did exactly what you said,and you were so correct,unfortunately I couldnt test run the motor tonight,but to determine the polarity phaseing I took the plugs out and span it over,John you were absolutly correct,the first way I had them connected I got 37 volts,well done,so then I swopped two cables over one each charge circuit with the other,I respan it over and had 0.9v, I then selcted this connection,joined the wires like this to eachother and then before connecting to the reg I tested betweeen the two cables that were joined,as the two connections that would be soon to be connected to the reg,I span this over and got 9v on spin over,I presume this is now correct and so proceeded to connect these to the reg.
