Re: using my 2 way radio

I think Canada has a better idea. You need a "restricted operators permit (maritime)" to transmit on VHF.

We had that here in the States some time back. I'm not so sure about the "better idea". I used to have a permit as required. Now that it is not required anymore, I find more folks using them.

Sure you can " shoot the breeze"....on certain channels. While offshore fishing, captains and fishermen jabberjaw all day on an approved channel. I prefer a VHF over a cell phone anyday. Grab the mic....push a button talk....release....listen......She is right in front of me and becomes second nature.

Now. Martinsburg? I would think a VHF would be popular. I guess it depends on where you are boating. There are many places you can launch your vessel from where you are at. Been a few years, but really enjoy that place.

Gook Luck!

^^^^+2 on "shoot the breeze" on the right channels.
I don't, just a radio check to CG when going out.

When the perch are running on Lake Erie you won't find an empty second on the radio to jump in, to talk. :D
School of perch can be miles long x miles wide, so the boys do get excited. Where are they and where are they headed?
Just fun to listen.
Walleye, now that's worth getting excited about.

I know we are having some fun here, but, to tell you the truth....Proper lingo and courtey on a VHF transmission goes a long way in defineing you. Short, and to the point. Learn them. The real boating community respects that. Many haven't met you!

....then all heck brakes loose at the dock! Do whatca want.

Over and out.

Lets see, basic radio lingo.

Identify yourself= person you want to talk with "this is" -Bob-"over"
your finished your sentance and want a reply=over
You understand what the other guy said=Roger
The other guys conversation was only half understood=Say again (repeat means you want another birage of arty dropped on a position, don't use that)
End the conversation =out (not over and out or your putting the conversation back in the other guys court)

Spell Phoneticaly a=alpha b=bravo ETC

In your area......Go to channel 16 and hail SeaTow or Towboat US. Once they answer, ask them what working channel they wish to switch to.

SeaTow, SeaTow, Cool.....1.....6.....over.

It's a better idea to monitor CH16. I imagine it's the same down there, the coast guard will announce any hazards to shipping, severe weather warnings, etc.. Also you may pick up a call for assistance from another vessel in your area.

If you have a working VHF on board, you are REQUIRED to monitor channel 16 when not using another channel. It's obviously not an enforceable rule, but it's there.

Agree with Sasto about using the VHF correctly... it DOES say something about you.

In Canada it's only commercial vessels that are required to monitor 16.
One advantage of having to write a test, most people learn the regulations.

You can install and listen to the VHF but you are supposed to have a license to transmit a message. I believe the test is still free and the license is for life. There are organizations like the Canadian Power Squadroned who charge for a training coarse, But I just got a book and studied.
There is a fine, but I don't know how they would enforce it.
