After I've put the earmuffs on my I/O, how do I know the water is getting through the engine. Should the water be coming out the prop?

Re: using ear muffs

Once the muffs are attached and water flow started be ready to start the motor. Its not a good idea to allow the hose to run without the motor running, and also bad for the muffs to come off while running the engine.
Once the engine warms up and the thermostat opens you should get warm to hot water exiting the transom area near the upper. Make sure the drive is full down while doing this and don't rev the engine above 2000 RPm.

ya don't say what kinda drive ya got...

this is a mercruiser mc-1 drive

the pic has what i think is normal water flow out... out the prop hub, out the pee hole in the ft. of the bullet and spiting out both starboard and port idle relief ports. in the pic, ya gotta look close to see the water exiting the idle relief ports..

another good sign that the engine is getting water is the lack of overflow from the muff while the engine is running. when the engine is off the water just squirts out the sides of the cups.. when on, not much coming out the sides of the muffs.

if ya got some other drive my pic may not apply..

Hi Ziggy, don't think you are supposed to get a steady stream of water from that hole on the front of the lower. I certainly don't have that flow on my MC-1. Just get water from prop hub and relief ports. Some one more knowledgeable then me should be able to confirm.

TTK - you should get water from the hub almost straight after starting the engine and not just when at temp. On my 3.0L the thermostat housing bypasses some water to the manifold/risers at all times for cooling. If not you will be cooking your exhaust rubbers, for a short time, every time you run your engine.

I rebuilt my waterpump this week. I put the muffs on and didn't get much of anything. I filled a toat with water and dropped drive into it. It was prob 10 to 15 seconds before water started pumping out.

that's because (most likely) the cavity that leads to that hole is filled up with muck and plugging up that hole. i've had 2 mc-1's both had that cavity filled with muck. if ya dig out the muck. your's will have flow at that hole also..

78 mercruiser, water comes out the small hole too, normal, some water out the prop, and some spits out the upper exhaust ports. be sure to use good muffs. mine have a barbed nipple that sticks into the cup and it is prone to popping out if the water is turned up too much. have to watch that thing closely...

I do get water from that hole but it is not a steady stream like the photo. The hole is clear. what comes out is a mix of water and exhaust gas.
