Cool project, I hope you can keep us updated. I'm especially interested since I also have a 16' Springbok. Mine has a 1988 110 bubble back which I understand is essentially the same as an early 80s 140, the 140 being powerhead rated and the newer 110 being prop rated. Anyhow, I plan on tearing mine down this winter to put in new rings since one hole is at 104 psi and the other 3 are at 117. I just tore apart a 1990 88 Special so I've familiarized myself with the inner workings which should help. I also have the factory manual which is essential. Keep us posted fellow "Springboker".

Canadian Sprinboker? I'll be posting here as the project progresses. Our boating season is quite short, so I'll be tackling teardown after September. Need to build a stand and get it off the floor before the cars have to go back in the garage - I hate scraping frost of windows (and the wife makes me scrape hers...).

The 140 has some differences with the later 115 bubble back which are significant. The later 115's don't use the rubber intake filler blocks, worth 3-5 hp. Also, the 140 has high compression heads, whereas the 115 uses the low compression bathtub heads. There should be a big difference between 95-100 lbs compression and 130+ compression.

Buddy I bought it from said compression was in the 60s-80s. I've not checked, not even turned it over. Based on the block paint, everything looks to be original. Once I get it on a stand, I'll start with my own compression test before opening it up.

Even got the complete wiring harness and controls/cables. Throttle lever woudn't move and when I opened the control I found the typical broken fast idle interlock was broken. This same interlock spoiled our fun on vacation several years ago when it broke. Replacement interlock is a much beefier design.

Looking forward to seeing how this goes. When you get that 140 on board you can still keep the 90hp cover on it........... :)

Heh heh heh. Always been the plan.

Might not even paint anything - just leave it worn and oxidized. A 'rat rod' for the lake.

The more time I spend remodeling the appearance of my boat, the more pissed off I am when something happens to it............ Right now I have the newest boat that I have ever owned and it's 20yrs. old!!

Project is in full swing now, see other threads for details.

Now the motor's off the 'bok, I dragged it out to the car wash and blew off all the crap that's been gathering inside and in the motor well. Then out to the local roadside scale. Empty boat on trailer (EZ Loader roller type) weighs 640kg (1408lb). I can't find specs for it, but it's a 1982 Springbok Centurian 1685. Think it was supposed to weigh somewhere around 900lb but who knows?

What is the weight of the empty trailer ?

Don't have original specs for the trailer, but the new ones seem to be around 500lb. Being an old trailer, I'd expect it to be heavier, especially since it has an aftermarket axle with brakes and larger wheels and tires.

Weighed the trailer by its lonesome - 240kg (528lb)
Boat plus trailer without motor - 640kg (1408lb)
Therefore boat is 400kg (880lb) - a gnat's whisker from the 900lbs I'd thought.
Add 310lb for the motor and the dry weight of the boat and motor is 1190lb.

Add a couple of 6US gal tanks at about 50lb each and a 30lb battery and me and I'm floating around 1550lb - not a lot of weight for 140 ponies. Giddyup!!
