the donor Johnson coughed up its lower unit without too much of a fuss ... I did manage to bust my favorite screwdriver (and its a SNAP ON, for chrissakes!)(Snap off screwdrivers, lol)

one of the exhaust housing screws was a bit buggered, but luckily I have very strong arms and hands, lol, bulk strength is a good thing!

Besides a new impeller, anything else to do while I have the bottom part off? Im going to drain the lower unit once its off, easier to deal with that way ...

I did see something that looked like threads in the seal behind the prop .... fine threads, dont know if its old braided fishing line remnants or not

everyone talks about finding low hour gems, naturally I get one that looks like its been to helll and back, the shear pin hole is elongated, which tells me this poor beater has thunked its fair share of rocks, lol, at least I have a collection of props to choose from!

there isnt any play in the shaft tho, this seems to be a solid lower unit .. which is what I wanted it to be!

time to tear some more apart <G>

Re: updates on the Johnson

What color is your oil (that you're draining out)?

While it's off, I would pressure/vacuum test the unit to check for leaks, and replace any worn seals. Do you have a water pump plate and/or cover? Any grooves worn in?

Threads behind the prop-shaft seal? Are you talking about the spring that goes around the seal and presses it to the prop-shaft!? You wouldn't normally want to see that from the outside...

Please continue with your original threads. People have no idea what you are talking about or how you got to this point.
