Chris M,
I've towed/launched this rig approx 20 yrs and never hit anything so I guess they aren't in the way too much.

Big Poppa,
Each side has approx 3" to 4" space. It wouldn't hurt to have them closer if the beam is widest at the stern. My trailer has center rollers and they center the boat as it comes forward. I winch it the last couple feet so I can keep my feet dry.

Here's another view.
Many boats are wider in the center than near the stern where the posts will be so they have to clear the widest part. If they don't originally, they will once you load the boat (they will bend).

They will also bend if someone forces you onto the shoulder of the road and you graze a trash can that was placed too close to the road! Don't ask me how I know.

This is what I have but I mounted them on top of the frame because the brackets obscured the red reflectors on the fenders.

I put truck reflective tape on the posts for extra safety as it ic closer to eye level for motorists following.

With 20 years experience Im sure you dont need the guides, but they do look a good idea.

jtexas what comes around goes around.lol........but yes it is my brohter-in-law. He will back the trailer up but he won't load the boat. I had a couple of bad loads wich I would just back up and do it again. He doesn't feel comfy with it. Figures guides should help all. Maybe even the wife will do it. lol

It's easier to load with guides no matter how much experience. I do mostly single handed launching and the guides hold the boat while I dink around with the strap and winch. If you have someone drive the boat on while you drive the car guides aren't so important though.

For great entertainment, take a lawn chair and a six pack to a ramp on a holiday weekend and watch the amatuers launch/load their boat. :)
So that was you at the ramp heckling me from the lawn chair. I hope you enjoyed the entertainment I gave. I plan an encore performance this spring. :D

Ok BP-G, if your minds set then cool. However, based on my experience with my ski boat and trailer mounted guides, my only recommendation is that you ensure that the tops of the posts are well padded and/or free from edges that will damage the bow (when backed in on some steep ramps, they can sit not that far above the water line and with the boat rolling/pitching on a nasty day at the ramp....can cause damage).

I've been to Norfolk...is that water safe to play in?

The instructions were pretty pathetic with mine. You'll figure it out. And the tall ones hit the boat's rub rail so they don't really need any padding.

The ones I was looking at are on the top right of the page attached to the link below. I just am lookin for a simple guide. To help the brother-in- law and now that BillP brought it up i guess it would make it easier to load by my self.

As for the water.....Don't know how norfolks water is but the water on the James river isn't too bad. It's salt turning to brackish were I live. We water ski and swim in it for years and I haven't grown a third eye. lol

Great boating there. If your ever back in the area let me know and we'll hit the water. Maybe fish a little.
Rollers

Re: *UPDATE PICS* Roller Guide-on OR Bunk Style Board Guide-On

Ron,
That's a good point. If I dunk the trailer too deep on a steep ramp the tops of the guides will hit below the rub rail. I put the fire hose about 3" taller than the unistrut to make a soft cushion to prevent scratches. The hose is getting old and I'm thinking of replacing it with a small round boat fender. Cut one end off and slip it over the unistrut.

Big Papa...James River? Does Piney Point, MD ring a bell? I went to merchant marine school(LSS)on the James River. It was at an old Navy base converted into a training school. Dare I say it was in 1968? Beautiful boating county up there.

I have a very miss matched boat and trailer combo so I made some bunk style guide ons out of square tube and 4 foot treated 2x4's and the boat almost has to go on the trailer straight.

There is only about and inch or so of clearance but my boat is just an old 1984 16' jon style aluminum bass boat that I am not to concerned about getting scuffed up. Its burried in the snow right now but I will go out and see if I can get a picture.

not pretty but they work.(I think they would work even better if I lowered the boards or add a second lower set.) The brackets are just square tube welded to angle iron attached to the trailer with U bolts.

I really should paint them. I am also going to mount my tail lights on them so they will stay out of the water.

My Tin Barge has such a flat bottom, that it was Impossible to get Centered...........
The Problem with the Little Stubby 1s that you're looking at,..On a Steep Ramp, My boat would float Over them,+ hang on the Edge/Corner of the hull.....

This shot is of Gen 4 or 5..... The Next Gen is in the works,.... Adding More Lights....
They're a combination of Aluminum Conduit, Hand Rails,+ Hospital Beds....... Oh,.. A Couple Bungee Cords too......
The way the Angle pc. is mounted to the trailer frame, it'll Give about 30* or so, Before something Snaps.......
The Spring Pressure provided by the Bungee Cords will hold it Centered Really Well,... Unless some YaHoo has dug a Scourhole in the launch,+ the trailer comes up 1 side 1st..........
