Someone told me that getting rid of the points and coil ignition with an upgrade to A newer style CDI is easy and well worth it. Does anyone know if this is true, and what I'd need and where to get it? Thanks in advance, just started on this site but I can tell it is a great resource!!!!

Well, if you are talking about a larger older Chrysler engine with distributor, points, and coil, then yes the upgrade to CDI is relatively easy--if you have the parts. Buying them new would be prohibitive so you would need to scrounge up used parts. But in all likelyhood you will not see an increase in performance. True, the pointless ignition is a bit more precise in timing but you still need the distributor--and the distributor needs a special shaft and electric eye.

If you want to go distributor-less, then you need a different flywheel, trigger, stator, Trigger and stator mount (which requires drilling and tapping 5 holes ) plus the CD modules and coils.

A lot of fuss for a very little return. If your engine is running well with no ignition issues, stay with what you have.

Remember, automobiles had points and coil ignition up to the 1970s and ran very well.

Re: Update ignition?

Thanks for the info. Right now I'm having enough trouble getting it to run low RPM that I think I'll focus on the other issues.
