Unusual Johnson 35

I bought at a UK army surplus sale an unused Johnson 35, I say unused because the powerhead was full of oil, everything covered in grease and plugs, prop etc unmarked. It appears to be 1980s and I wonder if anyone has any info??. Engine is finished in olive green with model no J35XHL CR, the CR appears elsewhere on the motor in larger letters. It is longshaft with a heavy cast alloy guard round the prop. Although it has a through hub exhaust leg and prop, the exhaust actually exits through cylinders with down facing fishtails, both sides, just below the powerhead (and very obviously an original factory job). It is manual start but has a charging socket on the side. The tiller throttle has a large lump, where a normal motor has the Idle-Start-Fast ring, which has a strong detent and click in the start position. Has anyone any ideas about these. Its not unique as there were 10 in the sale.

Sounds interesting. There's another thread going where a guy found a military motor. I'm not sure what ll the grease is for, but most military spec motors are designed to be full submersible for over 30 min, then start right up again as well as being more robust overall. As a result, they tend to have lots of fancy gizmos bolted on to them to allow them to be so rugged. Not sure how easy it would be to get parts, or convert it back to civilian specs, but I'd be curious to know what happens.

Mathew, Welcome to the forum! When I looked for this model number in the secret decoding database for military motors in the FAQ's, I did not see anything close. However, if it has three cylinders and there is a possibility that the "X" in the sequence is actually a "K", then here's what I found: J=Johnson, 35=horsepower, , K=three cylinder 25/35HP, H=Less integral tank/hydraulic steering, L=long shaft, C=year 8 and R=year 4. This is from the 1980-1998 model year legend. Good luck!
