Last week, while on vacation, my Stingray's engine(1999 5.7 Mercruiser w Alpha outdrive) quit while tubing. Simply died. I have never had any problems before. I restarted, ran a few minutes, then it died again never to restart. This happend on Monday, so I was w/o my boat most of my vacation.
Local marina checked coil and ignition module and said both were OK. He said it must be the ECU. He called Merc, they want $2400.00 to replace the ECU. I can buy new new Jasper Marine engine for near that!
I suspected my coil was shorted since my thru-hull exhaust was dripping some water on it, but not the case.

I just got back from working on the boat and found something interesting.
After cranking a few times, it started, so I quickly shut it off and hooked the hose to it. It started and ran for a few minutes, I shut it off, then it woudn't re-start. I pulled the flame arrestor and saw that it wasn't spraying fuel consistantly. Continuing to crank, I noticed it would shoot fuel intermittantly and fire each time fuel was delivered, but most of the time, no fuel was spraying. I turned the key off, then to the run position. While the key was in the run position with the motor off, fuel would randomly spray in into the manifold! No sequence, just random.
While on vacation the switch was loose in the dash and would rotate when I tried to start the engine until I added a washer behind the lock ring. Is it possible the switch wires could cause this?
Right now, it is looking like the ECM to me.

Re: Unusual engine problem

Can you post the serial number of the engine?

When the engine won't start you should check for spark from the coil.

If the module in the distributor is grey suspect it.

Would the module cause it to spray fuel while the engine is not running though?
That is the perplexing thing to me.

Re: Unusual engine problem

Sounds like you have a faulty crank position sensor to me.
