OK Posters! What are some wierd and unusual baits you've used or heard of? I, personally have baited trotlines with everything from Spam to Ivory Soap and have caught fish on all of them. How 'bout you?

Re: Unusual Bait

I caught a Bass on a piece of bubblegum one time on a bet. I just stretched it out like a skinny worm and pitched it in. Caught it on the second or third cast. Even surprised myself.

Re: Unusual Bait

When I used to run trotlines I would just coat the lines with roofing tar and no bait on the hooks. Seems like something in the pitch ticked them off and they would attack the line and get hooked. Don't know why it worked but it did. A 90yr man showed me that when I complained that the bait shop didn't open in time for me to get shiners.

roofing tar, soap, etc., one of my favorites is dog food pellets and for gar a red rag with the edges shredded.

Re: Unusual Bait

How about no bait at all. I catch bluegills sometimes when they won't bite on anything else by using a tiny gold hook all by itself. I guess they think it's some little worm or something.

Re: Unusual Bait

I caught two large Carp 15+ pounds one time with my bare hands when I was a kid... They wouldn't take my nightcrawlers that I was dropping right in front of them in a small pool on the Little Walnut river. They worked down stream through a riffle and over half of their body was exposed as they tried to swim down to the next pool... I got so pissed, I dropped my pole and went after them.... I caught two, but had to use a rock to calm them down in the process... :D

Carp like dough balls, and I apologize but I am not a catch and release guy.

Re: Unusual Bait

One time my sister and I were fishing and we were running low on bait. So my sis takes the ham off the last bite of her ham sandwich and puts it on her hook, five minutes later a four pound catfish. I still kid her about catching fish on a ham sandwich.

I see nobody's mentioned rotten cheese. We used to bait catfish boxes with some gosh-awful smelling rotten cheese that we obtained from a local dairy product distributer. Smelled like crap to us, but the catfish sure liked it!

Re: Unusual Bait

Was catfishing, and had caught several cats, when I hooked the biggest bream of my life. Later I ran out of livers, and decided to clean the bream, and pulled the heart. I used that heart dipped in liver juice the rest of the night. Caught 23 more fish on it. It was so tough it would not come off the hook.

Also used nylon rope frayed out to catch Gar.

In Michigan, I was bass fishing and ran out of worms, so i put a cigarette butt on the hook and caught a bream.

Skinny little red rubber bands - before they sold plastic worms in the store.

When I was a kid we used to use a can of peas to fish for bluegills. We would catch more than Dad who insisted on using nightcrawlers. ;)

Chicken skin. I was fishing for channel cats one evening and I saw a 2# bass cruising the shoreline. I tossed the skin out on a worm hook and just started jerking it back. Bam! Caught the bass. This weekend I caught a spotted gar on a piece of yarn.

Re: Unusual Bait

Not so, txswinner. Carp caught from clean water are very good eating. That said, I rarely bother. The meat is good, but too darned many bones to make it worthwhile...most of the time.

But, then, I've eaten a lot of fish that most people wouldn't dream of eating. I'm looking right now to catch some American Eels in the St. Croix river this fall. I've eaten eel in Europe and liked it, and now I find that they can be caught right here in the good old USA.

Nobody fishes for them, though, so I'm going to be starting from scratch. There is one commercial eel fisherman on the St. Croix that I know of, but he's not much help, since he nets the things.

I'll start looking at how rod and reel fishermen catch them in Europe and start from there.

Eel! Yumm!
