Unknown contamination

I'am having a problem with applying the Perfection paint, what is taking place is large number's or pin holes on certain area's of the boat (when sprayed). Now when i started this project i gave the boat two wipe down's with acetone, changed the cloth face every 4-5 feet, sanded it down with 150 and applied two coat's or prime coat and sanded them down.

Trying to apply the perfection is difficult to say the least, first layer i recieved some pin hole's, so i wet sanded the finish and once again wiped down the paint with acetone, using the tip and roll method i still am getting area's that the paint will not lay and still some pin hole's..... Is it possible my acetone has some type of contaminate in it?

I find it hard to believe that i missed some of the orignal wax and am still dealing with it.

I am no expert on this but I believe what you are experiencing is called "fish eye" some paint company's have an additive to stop it. don't know if perfection is one of them tho...good luck

Re: Unknown contamination

TG,
Have you contacted Interlux about this? My dealings with their phone support is very good. I glad to be reading stuff like this because in my own project I'm planning on doing the "roll and tip" method using Brightside. Keep us posted on the outcome.

TG (my "real" initials)

BTW, I'm from the Portland area; born/raised in Milwaukie. Now I'm in Tacoma, WA. Where do you usually boat?

Re: Unknown contamination

Never knew they had a support line, so that's the next stop for me. Bright Side's is very easy to use in comparsion to this Perfection, Just make sure it's 60 degree's low humidity and a clean surface. What i found was to add only 5-10 % of 333 brushing fluid, just barely enough to get it to flow and have at it. Use the high quality varnsh brush and easy on how much you apply, it took me 3 coat's to get a deep high luster finish i was looking for.
It's also very easy to spray and level's beautifully compared to this damm Perfection...:D

I go all over, Columbia Willamette, Three river's and been fooling around on the bar........trying to get enough nerve to get off shore and have some fun, but that damm bar and it's wild tide's just have me a little........leary, man i'd hate to get stuck out there waiting for a tide change in bad conditon's.. Surfing a 20' boat on a 20' roller at 15-20 mph is not my ideal of a good time at my old age..

 Well i just finished a conversation with Interlux, it seem's acetone flashes or dries to qucikly to remove wax and our body shop manager confirmed that using almost the exact same word's (xylene is the stuff to use). So it's back to the sanding boards.........See ya on the flip side

Re: Unknown contamination

Sorry I did not catch this prior to starting the Perfection job TG. I was already warned about using acetone. I used it to do the initial cleanup before I started the fairing on my deck last season. The guys at Mas epoxy were very adamant about not using acetone. According to them not only does it flash too quick it also can have contaminants straight out of the can. Mas recommended Lac thinner or 202 for initial cleaning when using epoxies and strictly 202 for dewaxing.

Re: Unknown contamination

It is my own fault for using acetone as a solvent for clearing wax, hell i have posted as such. There is much to learn in this arena of boat restoration, and hopefully this post will reach quite a few people.

Acetone is not a good de-waxer what so ever, that does not mean it will not clean up blemish's on your existing hull or gel-coat but do not and i mean DO_ NOT use it for dewaxing prior to painting.

Just a well learned lesson..... Your Milage May Vary.....

Re: Unknown contamination

ANY Exhaust fumes from a car, truck or even your chimney (if you burn fuel oil) can carry microscopic droplets in the air. You can't see them but wow do they cause fisheye.

You might want to call the company again and ask if (and what kind) of fisheye additive (automotive) can be used.......... If you do call again do me a favor (and everyone else here too) and ask what brand/type automotive paint color can be used to tint the paint. ....... would be handy information to have.

On the Interlux site I remember reading that tints cannot be used to change the color of their paints. They do recommend using paints of the same product line mixed to create custom colors. They gave an explanation for it but I cannot remember it. I will try to find it again and give a link.

Re: Unknown contamination

I am cynical and think they might work (automotive) but they want people to stay with their brands.

Perfection is a resign based product, the pigment is just added to the resign, varing the color's cannot be changed........ that is just a observation, i will ask but i think i already know the answer.

Think of Perfection as a colored varnish for your hull, no more no less...:)
