thinking of buying one of those cheap 100 dollar special universal boat cover to put over the factory cover. Currently the factory boat cover is still good but I can see it deteriorate fast with the me now storing my pontoon out in the elements. Not sure if doing this will help or hurt. What do you all think?

One of the biggest reasons for a cover to age and fail is Sun damage. A cover for the cover is an example of throwing good shade. I double cover.

Another important step is to pad any sharp corners that can poke through covers. Windy days and sharp edges can cause early failure to a new cover and old overs will get holes in no time.

The thing that ruins covers is the UV. So, a second cover is an awesome solution.

The thing that ruins boats is a cover that seals in the moisture and causes mold and eventually rot.

A quality boat cover lets the boat "breathe". Just be sure that the second cover will do the same.

Great idea however a blue poly tarp is a better idea.thats what I do.A cover on a cover will not air out and dry properly.A tarp is easier, cheaper and will give you all the airflow needed. Also in winter ,snow will slide off of the tarp much easier than any cover especially if pitched correctly.Charlie

A second cover does sound like a good idea.
Around here you really have to be creative with straps to keep a cover from being ripped off by the wind.

I have a decent cover over my stock mooring covers. It's made by Classic Accessories and cost me $164 on Amazon. I reccomend it. It has weared well.
They have different sizes, so the fit is really great. So don't just get a $100 "universal" one. Get one that fits for $60-$70 more, it's well worth it.

It has two breathing outlets toward the back for air to flow through.
It's said to be "trailerable" and I can confirm that. I do use it when I'm trailering.

It not only has the stretch fit hem, but also several built in straps that I attach to the trailer frame.

I have an 18 foot bow rider, so my mooring covers are one for the bow and one big one for the cockpit.

Like any cover, you need to make sure there's no puddling. If you find there's a low spot, stick whatever you have under there to prevent that. It may need an expandable pole or just a cushion or blow-up tube.

I double cover as well when it sits outside. I have a bow and cockpit cover, but those don’t cover the top cap. So when it does have to sit outside at the campgrounds I throw both on.
