I attached a few pictures
Hello, I am a newbie to boating and that is learning quite a bit on the forum(thank you) in hopes to one day become a DIY guy with boating .

So- I have an 89 Whaler Montauk with a 1990 Evinrude VRO 90 hp engine. I was washing the boat and noticed electrical tape coming off a bunch of wires. As I looked closer I noticed two wires (a white and black) were disconnected yet the green was connected. I removed the cowl and followed the wire and noticed another two wires disconnected (white and green) while the black seemed to be wired into a rubber connection.

I don?t know if I should be concerned about this or not. The engine started fine and all the accessories seem to work. The one thing that has never worked since I purchased the boat used was the tilt gauge on the center console. This is the gauge that seems to show the tilt of the outboard.

Do you guys have any suggestion about attaching the wires and how I should attach them??? Or should I just leave it alone and tape them up??? Any suggestions or advise you can give me would be much appreciated.

The previous owner or someone mucked around with the wiring. If your power trim and tilt is working it would appear that they ran new wires because the original wiring add issues. The wires that are broken are for trim and tilt and for the tilt sending signal.

If everything is working on tilt and trim I would say leave it alone and don't fix it if it aint broke. Tilt guage is useless anyway.

Thanks guys. So you guys think I should just tape this back up and leave it alone??????? From you responses I'm assuming it was rewired and the wiring I am talking about is dead and leading to nothing. Would you guys just leave it alone or try and solve the nonworking tilt gauge issue? I just don't want to mess anything up because I don't know a whole lot about electrical on an outboard.

It's not too hard to turn your head and look to see if the motor is up or down and after running it on the lake you can adjust it by sound and the way it's running. Probably the most useless guage on the boat.
