Re: unbelivable question asked when selling a boat!

Just sold my trailer on Craigslist. The guy who bought it was very nice and knew what he was doing. The other idiots...

It's a 6000# bunk trailer. One guy wanted to know if I thought by changing tires he could put a 10,000# boat on it...sure, right after you get it off my property.

Another guy wanted to know if he could convert it to carry his pontoon boat...yeah, probably not.

My favorite, however, was the very broken English response first asking where I lived and if the trailer was locked up. Nice. (Yes it is, and I'm pretty good with my 12 gauge) I was bored and decided to play along. He asked what my lowest price was, I told him I had a full price cash offer pending, so he offered $500 LESS and then was upset when I told him no!

I have replied back with more than the ad listed. Then they say what the price is listed at, and I go...oh yeah, that was my lowest price, figured I'd save the haggling.;)

As a buyer, why not haggle? I asked what their bottom line was and he said $500 below asking in addition I got a new prop on the boat. It would be stupid not haggle.

Haggling isn't the issue, that's part of any sale negotiation.

It's the trying to lowball sight unseen that comes off as pretty disingenuous.

I have no problem with haggling. In fact, due to haggling from craigslisters I now price everything 15% higher than I think it's worth. It's a win-win for everyone! What bugs me is when someone emails me asking what my lowest price is when they haven't even bothered to come and see it. It's even more annoying when I've had the item listed for less than 24 hours.

I sold a boat a few years back and after the haggling and cash transaction, he looked back and told me "You know...I would have paid more".

I just smiled and replied "You know...I would have taken less".

I have no problem with haggling. I rarely give asking price. But if someone wants to know my bottom dollar, they have a much better chance of finding it by making an offer. I would never be offended by an offer, I will simply counter or tell them no. But don't let the first thing out of your mouth be "what's the least you will take". I guess it's kinda of a peeve with me.

I guess I feel the person that is truly intrested in something is going to come and look at it before they want to know if they can "steal it". You take the time out of your day, I will gladly take the time out of mine. Does this make a little more sense to you now, from a sellers view?

Haha theres some good post on this thread but i must admit i agree dont ask whats the lowest ill take w/o even looking at it in person. There are some real SLOW BURNERS on craigslist & ive delt with my share when i listed my 18 footer with no motor. Cant begin to remember all the calls asking how good it runs, the top speed, & how many skiers it will pull. REALLY?? Read the ads & dont waste the sellers time.

Nothin' wrong with haggling, but that's not haggling. No one is going to actually tell you what their bottom line is. Some might not even know what there bottom line till they hear it and decide "what the heck".

My boat was listed for $1800. I would have gladly paid that price but I would have wanted to at least do a compression test on the motor first. I offered $1000 and the seller agreed saying it would get his wife off his back. I didn't bother with any tests because I figured I couldn't get hurt at that price since it was the exact hull I wanted on a nice trailer.

is that a 2667? if so, what year? I have an 80 that I'm fixing to advertise... I need to build a cabin entry door and hatch for it first tho.... I have the peices of the hatch but the door is missing completely. I could sure use several real good photos and maybe some measurements of the door if it's the same....

The ad says 3 seater, you can fit 3 at a time, it's not a clown car.
:D:D:D

I love the what's your lowest price question.
I will ask a similar question after inspection, if I am undecided and in the mood to dicker. When I bought my second Ranger the seller responded to my question by dropping his asking price 40%. I accepted, because it was fair.

Agree with many of you here. I truly hate those potential buyers that ask "what's the lowest price you will take?" It drives me up the tree!!!!

So my standard reply is usually "Not sure, but what's your offer?"

Doesn't bother me and I will always ask this myself to see if I can find out where the starting point is. I will also ask the question before I see the item depending on what it is.

As a buyer, I will take any info that the seller is willing to give in helping my negotiations. Took a negotiations class back at one of my old jobs. Was the first thing they tell you to ask.

I haggle on price all the time, but i try to do it respectfully.

Sometimes I do ask what the lowest price is before i go to see the item. If i have to drive 100 miles one way, I want to know if they will even entertain my price range at all. I am not going to drive 100 miles just to be shut down on a offer.

That's the spirit! :) It's the same question in reverse. Fair is fair.

Re: unbelivable question asked when selling a boat!

Many years ago I was in the presence of a master haggler. I was at a car dealership in Brockville, Ontario test driving a used car when a local farmer type came in. At that time a new fairly loaded Chevy went for about $17k. He wanted to deal with the sales manager only., and he had his eye on the shiny black Impala in the showroom. He promptly layed 14 grand on the hood and said he will pull 100 dollar bills from his pocket one at a time. If he runs out of money he and his money are gone, never to return. The manager had to say when to stop. He got the car, and at a great price to boot.

Re: unbelivable question asked when selling a boat!

Asking for the bottom line shouldn't be offensive. I have sold plenty on craigs list I would rather tell someone a comfortable number than have the jerk who wanted to low ball me on some chairs after he sorted through 30 of them and then offered me 80% off asking price. Took me 30 mins to put everything back in the rain. I will never do business with a man with a pony tail again lol
Got to love the stoners of craigslist
