Buddy has 1993 Evinrude 150. We have installed new control cables, but we are unable to get both forward and reverse. (which is why we purchased new cables in the first place, thinking the old one was maybe worn out) When we adjust the linkage cable to gain reverse...we loose forward and vise versa. Any direction of what to look at would be greatly appreciated.

Set the motor shift arm in neutral with the cable disconnected. Adjust the cable so it slips onto the stud without moving the shift arm, adjust trunnion nut as required to accomplish this.

The process is to set the controls to match the motor, not the other way around.

Has the leg been off just prior to this problem?

He just purchased motor, but according to previous owner foot has not been off and he had no problem with gears. We'll give that a shot this afternoon then update..thanks for quick response.

If you cannot get it to work, you will need to drop the gearcase and measure the shift shaft length. It is probably a good idea to replace the waterpump, anyway.

+1 on replacing the water pump - $50 well spent every couple of years.

That was actually going to be our next step...measuring shift shaft length and replace water pump....so I'm feeling more confident in our process of elimination steps. Thanks guys...can anyone point me where to find what the measurement for this engine would be on the shifter rod?

Can't help with the measurement, hopefully somebody will know. While you're at it, look at any of the pivot points for worn bushings and lost motion that could translate into need for excess travel for gear engagement F/N/R.

You could have the cables in the wrong holes in the control box..

Once you remove the gearcase, you will see that the shift rod goes thru a small hole in a cover, into the gearcase. Sometimes the metal on the cover will corrode and grab the shift rod. This makes it hard (but not impossible) to shift, and with some slop in the shift linkage, can cause what you are seeing.

Just one possibility.....
