Just bought a runabout from a yard sale, boats been in garage since 1979...original owner passed years ago and grand daughter sold everything, no title to be had. I found numbers on the right side stern...they looked like this

28

8 56
677

Welcome to iboats.

Numbers like that mean the boat is old.

After 1973, they had numbers like this: STR34753M73c

A boat with no registration, title, or history, is gonna be a bear to register.

How old does it look? Pictures, including the power train O/B or I/O?

Guessing only 1956 or 1977. Never seen numbers like that. Usually all in a row as example above. Numbers were not common on hulls before the 70's.
But the starboard upper side of the transom is where they have been since then.

Just check with your licencing authority, some states make it easy, some make it tough. Around here whether it was a boat or car you would just need a bill of sale, letter from the seller explaining how they got it and an extra form to fill out. Old vehicles without titles are a common thing. Took an extra 15 minutes worth of paperwork to register my titleless 53 Ford.

Since you know the PO, it shouldn't be too awful hard to get paperwork. Boat prob has/had a transferrable registration seeing that the boat is older. Your DMV should be able to look it up. You'll probably need some info from the PO's daughter.

Your location is a pretty key piece of information in this thread. For example, in here in PA, getting that boat registered will be no big deal. In some other states, it will be a nightmare and the boat will pretty much be worthless.

Have to agree 100%. Illinois is one of those nightmare states. Wisconsin, not so bad!
