I understand changing a u joint seal can be tricky. Do I really need a manual for this? Do I need to have it in gear to pull the drive shaft from the housing after undoing casle nut ?

What are you working on?

I understand changing a u joint seal can be tricky.

Changing a ujoint seal means you need to replace the complete ujoint, not just the seal, and there are 4 of them per ujoint.

Do I really need a manual for this?

If you have to ask, then yes.

Do I need to have it in gear to pull the drive shaft from the housing after undoing casle nut ?

Have no idea what you're talking about.

I'm sorry Admiral... I've got a Merc alpha , and I'm asking about changing the seal behind the u joint because my bellows have apparently leaked, so I'm changing the gimble bearing and all bellows .The kit comes with the u joint seal so I thought I should change it since there was water in the outdrive foot. What do you think?

Well, if you have an Alpha drive (and not an Alpha I Gen II drive) here is a link to the free online manual that you can look at.

Section 3A gives details on replacing the seal and resetting the rolling torque.

http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Servmanl/6/6covr3.pdf

As far as having the drive in forward, that if for removing the drive from the boat, not disassembling the upper.
See section 2 for removal and installation instructions.

Re: u joint seal

snatch it apart, beat it back together, use plenty of silicone, it will be ok.

I will try better tomorrow:)

follow DonS advice.

read the manual, then read it again.
study it for your constitutionals. then twist a wrench.
this aint rocket science but the damage from lack of maint is as expesive as improprer maint.
and trust me it can be a budjet buster.
its the only reason I post but its getting harder and harder.

No, it's a free online manual like I stated earlier. Just move your cursor over the cover page, notice it changes to a finger when over the big red box? Click it. Then you will go to the index. Then move your cursor over the index page and find the links to the different sections.
If you have Adobe Acrobat Reader version 6 or newer you can save the file to your computer. Some of them are fairly large, so give them time.

Don... I got it to work, I think the problem was , it took so long to open up after klicking a section ,I assumed it wasn't working. Changing that seal behind the u joint looks pretty complicated but I'll do it if I have to...the question is ,do I have to? I believe the drive shaft bellows was leaking , but will exposure to water ruin that seal? Will a pressure check reveal the answer? thanks

That seal keeps oil in, not water out. It is very possible it is still ok if the bellows were leaking. You are correct, pressure test the drive.

Unless the water that got in corroded the surface that the seal runs on. Should probably check to see if the surface is still clean.
