Hi Guys,

This year on my first couple of runs I noticed some light vibrations that seemed not typical. I noticed it also while running on the hose, esp right around 2,000rpm. It seemed to be worse in the full run down position and vibrations while doing turns.

I was suspecting the U-Joint or maybe the Gimbal, the drive has almost exactly 600 hours on it. Nothing seemed out of sorts when doing the yearly mantience this year, though Ill admit I probably didn't check the U-Joint for play as well as I should have when I had the drive pulled. So I pulled the drive again, sure enough the spider close to the drive end had some small play and in one axis and could make a clanking noise. The other axis on the same spider seemed to maybe have the a hint of play but no noise. The spider on the transom side was tight in both axis(as in no play but free motion).

So this brings me to replacing the U-Joints and clarifying some research Ive done on the forums.

My first question: I have a 1999 Volvo DP-SM 1.95 (Model# 3868913), is it possible to just replace the 2 spiders or does the whole Universal Joint assembly need to be replaced. Ive read conflicting things in regards to the DP-SM models. Id just like to get some clarification.

Volvo Part break down seems to show the part numbers for the spiders, but as the bulletin says and others have said in regards to the DP-SM, they should not be. Only replace the whole unit.

The spiders on my drive have the clips on the inside, here are some pictures:

Second question: If the spiders can be replaced, are the Sierra models the same exact part as the Volvo's? (as in the same OEM producer). Ive read mentions that they are the same. I usually only use Volvo parts for everything, but if I can literally the same exact part for half price, then Ill go Sierra.

Third: Ive replaced a U-Joint spider on a truck before, but this will be my first time on an outdrive. What are some tips for removal and reassembly, with the focus on getting them aligned evenly for proper balance.

Thanks for reading, I know its lengthy. My ultimate goal depending on the responses is to create a How-To with pictures and/or video to post back up.

Did you ever get an answer to this? I’m looking to replace just the spiders as well if possible.

Easy, I made a pusher, started at the leg end then took it into the bench and did the others there.
