Type of oil to use...recently bought it

I am in Ontario....Generally run the boat May 01 to Oct 01.....so the temperature is always above 18 or so...or lets say high 60's...I am having it winterized and bought synthetic 5w20...Is that ok for my 1997 4.3gl Volvo out drive....Thanks

I am not sure what Volvo recommends, but you should find out and use it. My 4.3LX MerCruiser specified special motor oil. Currently it is FC-W oil. Some years ago it was Quicksilver 25W40 oil or SAE 30 or SAE 40. It was never automotive multi-viscosity oil. From what I have been told, automotive multi-vis oil does not have the heavy duty lubrication properties necessary for a marine engine under typical load.

Yeah.....do not get too "wrapped around the axle" trying to find API SG oil.

It doesn't exist anymore. It's an obsolete specification.

Volvo recommends using their own oil: API SM, SAE 5W-30

The Volvo link above delineates between engines and drives. (and some Volvo drives USE ENGINE OIL btw)

Correct and I am aware of that, but I just wanted to make sure what the OP was asking for because his wording makes it just a little confusing. He can find answers to both at the link you provided, but I just wanted to clarify for other readers. I could see someone reading that as "what oil for my outdrive" followed by answers with engine oil which isn't necessarily correct.
