Two questions on 97 GP760

First question.. I have read a lot about the "fix" for porpoising by inserting washers at the ridie plate. I have read putting a stack of washers between the ride plate and hull will help this problem.. the question is do you put the thicker stack in front or the rear. I have read it both ways. I understand the stack in front works better on the gp1200, but the stack in back helps the 760. Is there anyone that has done this on the GP760 and benefitted? If so did you install in front or back?

Second Question.. Last time I had my 760 out at my cabin, I went to start it and take off while cold and it caught and then died. I had drifted closer to shore where there was some weedy junk and then I tried it again it caught and killed. I hit it again and it just clicked. I didn't think it ws the battery but I tried jumping it anyway - no go. After I pulled it out of the water, I found a weedy mess hanging out of the intake and cleared that away but have not yet gotten under there to see if it clogged further up there. Is it possible the weeds got sucked in there and bound up the impeller to the point it can't move?? I am guessing that it got stuck while the bendix was still engaged and it cannot budge.

Thoughts?? I am going to get under there tonight but I am new to skis and do not yet know what things can happen..

Thanks

It's definitely possible that weeds, or even a stick got in there and stopped it. When the engine turns, the jet pump does too...if it's stuck, it's the same scenario as seized pistons...the motor won't turn when you hit the starter.

OK, I pulled the intake grate and turned the shaft so there is movement there.

I replaced the battery (which needed to be done anyway) and still no go. I am guessing there is a bad spot of the starter.

Can I pull the flywheel cover to see if i can get the starter shaft to spin and potentially get it off of the bad spot??

Also, what is the easiest way to get to the starter on this beast.

Before you do that, do a few simple tests first. Jump the starter solenoid to make sure that it isn't the problem. If it turns the starter over, your problem is fixed, if not it is the starter.

I crossed the solenoid terminals and it just sparked. No action from the starter.. How do I get this out??

easiest way is to remove the exhaust to get to it.

OK I pulled the exhaust and pulled the starter and I think I found my problem. I tried to turn the starter shaft and it would not budge. So it must have had in internal failure in the bearing ro something as that thing is locked up tight. I am assuming I should be able to turn the shaft with a set of channel locks like any other starter motor.

Water would have gotten in there as last year a repair on the bottom let go and it filled to floatation and the starter would have been underwater. I thoght about trying to rebuild it but since it is such a pain, I am just going to replace as I do not want to remove it again.

I'm sure you can, but the goal is without extra parts. I'm surprised I didn't send this earlier but here's how you do a complete engine removal and install (it covers carb removal).

Follow those directions and make sure you account for all bolts in the proper places and you'll be fine. Make sure the gaskets are in good shape if you're reusing them. It doesn't hurt to spray a little copper gasket on them to get a better seal.

gaskets are cheap - replace them.

be sure to replace the o-ring on the nose of the starter since you have it out anyway.

I pulled apart the starter this evening just for kicks and the front bearing was seized hard. I am surprised it worked as long as it did..
