Hi, I have a 1986 searay with a 3.0 mercruiser 140hp just tried to do a tune up put new plugs wires, cap rotor and now i cant get it to start its getting spark but it just keeps on turning over. Any help would be great. Also when i got the new cap it didn't go all the way down so i put the old one back on. I bought the boat used and thinking that they put a auto cap on it not a marine. but cant get it to start for the life of me.

if you have spark and fuel it should run, at least it should try to run

are you sure you have spark, tested with a spark tester at the coil tower??

Did it run before the new parts were done?
Check that the rotor is in it's slot on the distributor shaft, verify that the cap is in it's slot on the distributor.
Confirm that the wires are to the correct cylinders and that they are making good contact at the cap & the plugs. Make sure the coil wire is in place and making good contact. Confirm that the safety lanyard for the kill switch is in position. Check spark, check for fuel. Check that you haven't mucked up the neutral safety switch or the shift cutout system. Check that you didn't knock off any of the wires to the coil or distributor.

Put shifter in fast idle or neutral position, pump the gas 2 or 3 times to set the choke. Start!

yes it ran great. Maybe i could have mixed up the wires going to the correct cylinders. Does anyone have a diagram on how they are supposed to go on? Might sound dump but what is the lanyard for the kill switch and where is it located? Thanks for all your help..
