The tune up kits for these older engines may involve a set of points and condenser. Your engine has an all electronic ignition. There are no "tune up" kits for this type engine. If the ignition works properly, all you need are spark plugs. All other ignition components are generally replaced on a failure basis only.

Great information, thank you. It all makes sense now because I couldn't see a condenser or where the points would be. I have recently had issues with my rectifier and have determined it was bad. The stator tested fine. My engine was operating fine and then just cut off, and I have not been able to bring it back to life. My understanding is that the rectifier plays a big role in distributing power to the ignition and charging systems. I purchased a rectifier and new plugs last night, so I should have them soon. How often should plugs be replaced? I've had the engine for three years and have not performed any electrical maintenance yet. I figured a new set of plugs was a good investment regardless of whether I put them in now or later.

The rectifier works off special charging coils on the stator. It passes current through to the battery. It is not associated with the ignition (coils) part of the stator. Plugs typically only get used maybe 30-50 hours each year. They should be fine for years. Replace them when you thing they may not be firing normally (missing.)

Thank you for the info. I had to replace the rectifier because of the broken/deteriorating wires anyway. I installed it today and, no surprise, my engine still has ignition problems. I had started a posting last week and I can't find it anymore. I really need to solve the ignition issue. SHould I start a new post with updated info. I don't want to break forum protocol. Thanks again. I have a lot to learn.

Have you ran a resistance test on the ignition charge coils in the stator? That would be the next thought, look for wires leading from the powerpacks to the stator. I don't work on motors exactly like yours, so I can't give you the exact wires to test, but you can look up the info on CDI's site.

1978 Evinrude 85hp Model 85895 Ignition Issues

I fortunately do have an original service manual. I performed a stator test, but it was for the leads from the rectifier, which I just replaced. I will try the other leads to the power packs. My earlier post (which has just disappeared. My last posting was on Sunday.) had a reply from someone who gave me a link to PDF manual that appeared to be helpful, but a little confusing. This may be the same site you are refering to. When you say resistance test, are you talking about using an ohm meter?

Yes resistance test with your ohm meter, I have a DVA meter and they are nice, but I have been able to find any of the problems I have had with an ohm meter.
