the longer you wait going into the winter, the slower the market is going to get. realy $9000 was a reasonable offer. $8500 would look good to me if i was tied up i an other boat. how much does it cost you to keep both?

if you can afford it i think the best option would be to store it until spring when the boat market is at its highest of the year
otherwise i would sell it quickly to get the most money you can, the amount of money people are willing to pay for a boat will keep going down until spring

1991, 200 overnighter. be real you are trying to sell a 18 year old boat. it does not matter how much you have into it. it matters how much some one is willing to pay for it, in todays economy. you had an great offer in Aug, now you have lost $500 in to months. i would have jumped all over the $9,000. you better take what you can get now. remember none of us have a crystal ball into the future economy. spring you may only get $5,000 for it. and the boat will be that much older.

I think I would hold onto it until spring and then try to sell it. Boat prices always go up in the sprng as people are interested in getting out on the water. Also, people have tax money in thier pockets and it is not as hard to burn that money...

I think you should take the offer. While it's true that people ask more for boats in the spring, they aren't actually worth anymore money. And lets not forget, in the spring, it will be 2010, so your boat will be one year older in peoples minds. It will be a 19 year old boat, not an 18 year old boat. And boats don't appreciate in value. Just because you put $1500 in doesn't mean you should expect to get that $1500 back out of it. It would be nice if it works that way, but it doesn't.

A bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush, as they say. If the economy doesn't improve, or gets worse, you may have to take even less in the spring. And that will be after you had to store it for the winter. It's your boat, do what you want, but if it were me, I'd sell. $8500 is a very fair offer. In fact, if I were looking for a boat that old, I'd think $8500 is over priced.

Really, the saw off point is affected by a multitude of things. The seller's financial situation, the desire to sell, the market, etc., etc.,

Like the others I would suggest you had a good offer there at 9K. Remember, boats for the most part are pure luxury sucking up lots of people's quickly shrinking disposable income. The market overall for that kind of thing will be miniscule compared to, say, the automotive market, where many people absolutely need to buy a car. Not that there aren't other fish in the sea, it's a much smaller sea with far fewer fish.

Time of year will also play an issue. If I were in the market now I'd be lowballing everyone knowing they are facing storage hassles only to maybe try again in the spring. On a boat your size that could represent a fair chunk of storage dollars.

So, I'd be tempted to grab the 8500 now. Even if you have a place to keep the boat it's still one more thing in your life distracting you from the new baby!

Of course, you could always go back to the original offerer and see if he ever bought anything. You might still get that 9 grand.

I would suggest looking at Craigslist, Ebay, and the local swap/shop rag. I don't know what condition your boat is in, but 9k for a 19 year old boat seems awful high to me. Particularly in today's economy. Sorry, I'm not trying to take the wind out of your sails. Maybe the market in wa. is better.

I can only suggest what to do from a quote from the movie Trading Places [Eddie Murphy - Dan Akroid]
"SELL!! MORTIMER SELL!!
take what you can get now, your new focus is your new boat, you will forget about any money you put into the old one, because of the money you now... will be putting into the new one.

Sell it and move on, storing something of this size that you don't want for another 8 months in "hopes" of getting another $500.00 is not a good idea.

Sell, boats are not an investment. You get your money back on the original purchase. The rest is maintenance and depreciation.
You have the attention of a buyer right now. If he won't compromise at all you are stuck waiting till spring.
I would sell now.

You're one of THOSE people. I see it all the time on c-list and my local sell it magazine. Asking thousands of $$ over the value of the boat cause you paid x-amount and put x-amount into it. Only a sucker would pay more than 5K for a 19 year old 20' cuddy, maybe 6K at the stealership and it should be in like new condition.

With that said...The actual value of anything is only what someone else is willing to pay for it, so if someone wants to pay you $8500 for your boat you should take it.

Harsh comments but is some truth there  I reckon you should take the best offer now while its there as remember the boat gets older each and every day .

Yup, a little harsh but I also agree. If you're bound and determined to get "your" price for it, then hang on. Maybe you will. By any reasonable standard, however, that boat is overpriced unless it's in showroom condition. Hard for me to believe you actually got offers of 8500 and 9000 for it.

OK OK, Looking back at it, I did come across sort of harsh, sorry about that.:)

Maybe the market is completely different in your area.. Call the $8500 offer and take it. Wouldnt want to chance something going wrong over the winter like a cracked block due to a bad witerization..etc.

Boats do tend to cost more in Seattle for some reason, I have had to drive down to Portland to buy my last two boats but that was fine with me. I would take the 8500 in a heartbeat though. in another 2 months it will be a year older and may slip down to 8K. It must be in perfect shape though for that old of a boat. Cuddies don't seem to be as popular up here though as we have a pretty short season and when it is boating season everyone wants an open bow. The pocket cruisers and bigger boats are also pretty popular year round though.

Just as a reference point I just bought my boat a 2002 Sea ray weekender with 100 hrs on it when I looked at this boat in July i offered him $18,000 he declined my offer I bought that same boat in October for $14,000 the boat market is a buyers market if you can get $8500 take that and run the economy is not going to get better to the point of the boat market becoming a sellers market for a long long time IMHO
