trying to find out what kind of buccanner i have only have serial # please help

i just purcased a buccanner i think its a 50s i was told it was 15hp the pics i find that match it are 25hp it doesnt have a model # on lt does any one know how to find the make with the serial # it is 9 304021 thank you i have attached a pic also it was painted blue and white it was origanily terqouis and white

A bit difficult to tell from the pic but I believe it's a 15. The 'Buccaneer' model should be a 15. I have a 63 Buccaneer and it's a 15. Age-wise I'd say it's a 56 to 58 model. Hopefully someone else can pin it down better. All-in-all they're a great motor (Evinrude/Johnson cousin). Mine is one of the best runners I have. Don't look for a thermostat as they dont have one. They use the early Evinrude 15 powerhead (up to 56 I believe).

Forgot to mention: Your motor would be a 12 and not a 15. Even though it uses the Evinrude powerhead it was rated at 12 hp. The later models like my 63 were rated at 15. I believe it was so as not to compete with the Evinrude/Johnsons on the same horsepower level. I don't notice the difference when I run my 15 Gale or my 18 Evinrude.

thanks for your help i got that motor from a guy that left it outside for 5 years its seised up with very little surface rust on the piston walls im gona free it cleen the carb and replace the plugs and see if it runs i guess who ever painted it took off the tag with the model # on it if i need parts its gona be hard to find with out model# thanks again

I'm having trouble deciding if it is a 12hp or a 25hp. They look similar except the 25 is considerably larger. If you take a picture with one of the lower cowlings removed, it will be easy to tell.

WARNING: If it is a 12 and if you try to free it up without taking it apart you risk destroying the connecting rods. They are aluminum with silver plating. The silver is the bearing. If there is rust in there, it will scrape away at the silver when you rotate it. Goodby silver, goodby bearing, and goodby powerhead.

The only year they were turquois was 1957. 1958-58 was white with turquois lower shrouds, and had different side medallions. So, 1957 it is.

thank you f-r very helpfull that looks to be my motor was hoping it was a 25 hp i will post more pics later today o well if i can get it runing itll be better then my 6hp u said i should take it apart before freeing it up would that be a complete tear down im just learning how to work on outboards thank you ps sorry for any misspelling i cant spell well

Yes, a complete tear-down. At this point, we don't know if there is any rust in the rods or not. But I can tell you from experience that it is all too common, due to a poor design of the lower crankshaft seal allowing water intrusion into the crankcase.

They are a great motor, but just can't stand water where it isn't supposed to be.

EDIT: Just noticed your added pictures. It is a 12hp, no doubt about it.

looks like i have my work cutt out for me thanks again very helfull i have one more question since i dont have the modell #will any 57 gale parts match also im asuming after the tear down im gona need a gasket set for the power head do u know a good place to find that and is there any outher gaskets or seals u would recomend geting and replacing

Send me a PM and I'll reply with the complete parts book. Once you have the part numbers, any Evinrude dealer can supply the parts, if available. But they won't give you the time of day without the part numbers. Especially since they probably don't have the book either.

where did you get that # doent come up for Gales...

I don't know where he found the number but 304021 is listed as a clamp. 15 cents in 1964. $2.52 now.

i got the number off of the mounting brackett i guess its a part number i thought it was the serial #
