Hello all. First time posting on this forum. I picked up this old Johnson 9.9 from a coworker yesterday for next to nothing. He said it ran when he put it in the barn 12 years ago but it hasn’t been touched since. It was not stored properly so I am going through it and going to be fixing it up either to put on my 14’ Sea Scamp or sell. From the research I’ve done it’s a 1979 9.9. I’ve searched the model number but I cannot find anything with the “E” on the end of the model number. The plate is missing but the plug on the power head says “10RL79E”

I’m wondering if it was meant to be a “B” and was miss stamped. The intentional “E” below the model number does look slightly different.

That plug does shows a nice E for sure could be just a small mod upgrade

in any event do the easy stuff first .. sad to see a barn waisted kicker nothing a good degunk , wash an a can of paint can't revive
check compression oil up the cyl make certain it turns
check for sparks change impeller change GC oil etc...
clean the carb check hoses check-clean replace fuel pump filter... maybe the whole pump

lots of utubes to help.

if compression is to low it may be a dud or a gem...explore why

nice project !

The corrosion would indicate salt water use.----Do a compression test on it.----Post the values here.-----If that test is good put a new water pump impeller in before launching the boat.

Those primer valve are easy to find used.----They were installed on many motors from 1980 to 2005.----From 9.9 to 300 HP motors !!

I don’t have a compression tester on hand. It does feel low though in comparison to my Evinrude 7.5 when I do a slow pull on the cord.

The trailing letter indicates any mid-year engineering changes that were made--IF any were made. Otherwise it means nothing.

Looks like it was overheated once or twice. Pull rope out of recoil, inject wd 40 in recoil and work it free. Large gear on recoil is an old man arm breaker. Poor design in my opinion.

That starter is well designed.----But it appears that someone greased the gear and that is a No, No.

Also, A and W root beer is great but something with 6 percent alcohol is better when working on old motors. Fuel tank is not in a "run" position. Water heater is missing expansion tank....house may flood soon.

All free advice, no Venmo needed!

😂😂😂 1. I do not drink alcohol. 2. Wasn’t “running” the fuel tank. 3. House is a rental. But thanks for the advice!

After a bit of tinkering, she did turn over and putter for a moment. Not worried about the impeller as I plan to replace it anyway. That did give me hope though on a future rebuild project. Lots of gaskets to order. And a new fuel pump as this one has a small crack in it that is allowing air in. Had that problem on my 7.5 as well. This project will be shelved for awhile but I will post a progress thread when I start it! Thanks for all the input y’all!

P.S. I like how active this forum is compared to another that I joined. All the replies are encouraging. The other forum hasn’t had a single reply yet and posted at the same time 🤷🏻

If the recoil gear was smaller it would be easier to pull over.----Flywheel would turn slower and may not generate spark.----Groove on bottom of that gear must not be lubricated.

I don't drink alcohol either but when working on these older motors I think about drinking again, especially when I snap off a stainless steel bolt. I do sniff ether from time to time and that seems to help!

I look forward to monitoring this thread. 😎
