Re: Trying to buy a boat

Another picture he just posted.. I may just pass on this one.
Although it looks fixable. Don't see anything broken other than the steering.
BTW motors are twin 140HP looper Johnsons. Are they worth anything?
Opinions?'

This is not something you'd want to get into, not for the money they want.

my $.02

What do you think is a fair offer? do you know anything about the engines? Gas consumer?
That's not worth $5500.

Again,
I would need steering which I'm not sure if I need to get a specific one. Probably around $500? I don't know
Seat fabric- not sure how much that costs.
Inside should be nasty as well. cushions, seats, cables, lights
couple thousand there i guess.

Not worth it I think..
Only thing I like about this boat is outboard engines and cuddy cabin.

Re: Trying to buy a boat

Those two Evernudes will suck gas like no tomorrow, you'll want to go out with a tanker following close by. Those V-block OMC motors (Johnson/Evinrude) can either work really well or they can really be a pain. For those motors to run nicely you need even compression across the board in all cylinders. Once compression goes down they get hard to start and run kinda poorly. If those out boards are from 77 they are pre mix oil and gas motors, , and if that boat has a belly tank which I assume it would, I would hate to see what the inside that gas tank looks like. As others have said, I think I would pass on this one.

Thank you! I think I'm passing..

I'll keep this thread to post the deals I find locally.
Are there any cabin cruisers done with outboards?

What are good brands that do not suck much gas?

We all understand your hot to buy a boat, but stay away from that one. Like my mom always told me, "Good things come to those who wait". That boat will cost you well over 5,000 just to get it in the water, maybe 10,000, to be safe. IO's are alot better on fuel too.

If they're Loopers, aren't the newer than '77? I have a Cross Flow that's a '79, and I thought' the loopers were later models.
Regardless, I'd tend to agree with most of the responses you've gotten. I, for one, know nothing about the average sale price of things in Puerto Rico, you'll have to gauge that for yourself. I will say this, though, if that boat was here in the States, in the Florida area, at least, and in that condition, I couldn't imagine the person ever asking more than 3K for it, and even that is a stretch. Good luck, I know how it is when you get your mind set on boating, put the money together, and then can't find the one! As hard as it is, though, take your time and get something that you won't regret. I like the idea about having the uncle help you, and I'd start asking everyone I knew because someone might be willing to sell you a boat that hadn't thought about it before you asked. Keep in touch!

Thank you, What makes the i/o motors consume less gas?

I believe loopers are from the 87? I'm not sure but I think they are.

You think it is even worth offering him 2800 for the boat? I saw similar condition sea rays sell for less

This one was in great cond.

Re: Trying to buy a boat

I've been down the 30 year-old boat path before. For me it ended well ONLY because of ridiculous, unbelievably good luck. Your story may not end that way.

Excuse me for being "that guy", but are you REALLY still considering this thing? Doesn't the fact that one sold on ebay for $450 give you a funny little feeling? You already know the interior's crap. Engines are modded and it was probably a hack job. Steering is shot. Chances are 10 to 1 that the stringers, transom, and floors are rotten, especially in the state it's been kept in. REALLY?

Don't even make an offer. Run away. You'll be much happier in the long run. You don't know me, but trust me.

Re: Trying to buy a boat

IO's are 4 stroke motors. The newer within 10 yrs, OB's 2 strokes are better on fuel. The 4 stroke OB's are better on fuel too. I now have a 1987 90HP crossflow, on a 16ft glass boat, and uses twice as much fuel as my sold 1984 19ft bayliner with a 125 HP, 4 banger IO, 4 stroke did.

If that Sea Ray was a boat that was in dry storeage for many years, and had the IO's it came with, and no rot, and you could take it for a spin on the water, and just needed a good cleaning , and some interier work, it would be ok. Streeing alone could get into big bucks to get it to work right. At this point, you dont even know if the motors are any good, much less the rest of the boat. I dont mean to let you down, but I would stay way from that one.

Re: Trying to buy a boat

It's a 1994 cuddy cabin with 4.3L mercruiser engine. He says it is in great condition.

Are these boats made for lakes or are they fine in light waves. I'm looking for a boat for the virgin islands.

The guy is asking 6500 for the maxum.
I also found a guy with a 1970 restored cabin cruiser 20' 115HP motor evinrude. he is asking 4700.
Boat looks very good in the picture. He is sending me a couple more now.

And the plot thickens. Are you planning on going from PR to the VI? If so you haven't yet mentioned a boat worthy of making that trip. I'm beginning to think you may be what the USCG calls 'job security'.

Re: Trying to buy a boat

Sorry I didn't mention. The boat would be pulled by a larger one. This one will be used to skip from island to island.
Thanks

Here are a couple more pics
