I have maybe ~170lbs worth of stuff and people in at the lightest when this triggers. In theory I think I get 1200-1400 lbs of payload or something like that. So 900 lbs for trailer max then even say 200 lbs of people and stuff and it should still be well under.

Yeah, it sounds like payload isn't your problem. I'd be looking at whether you have a class III or IV hitch.

Too dam many thing on new vehicles. Im actively looking for a 70s truck.
You mean a 70s truck where a 1 ton version won't even tow what a 1/2T can now?

I had a mid 70s 3/4T truck with a 454. 240HP and 370 ft lbs at 3800 RPM. It got around 8 MPG

My 2018 F150 has the 3.5 ecoboost engine. It has 375HP and 470 ft lbs at 2500RPM and gets 20MPG on the highway.

my simple post was not about towing capacity nor about mpg it was about all the stuff that can go bad on new vehicles comparative to the simplicity of older vehicles.

Problem is, the reason newer trucks have more power is all the new stuff that is on the new trucks!

Here is my old tow rig. Now it has a 454 vortec with a 4l80e and matching transfer case. Working on upgrade to 6.0 ls3. I get a lot of complements having 70's truck with matching Era boat20231221_135952.jpg20231221_140204.jpg20231221_165910.jpg20231221_135952.jpg20231221_140204.jpg20231221_165910.jpg

An old Reinell...We used to have one of those. Ours was a 75 24' with soft top. Not the best built boat in the world but we put close to 1000 hours on it.

I agree, I hate the new trucks for half of what they offer and the other half is either nice or I just don't care. If I could get a 10 year old duramax I gladly would but around here they all have too much rust for my liking
I hear you on the rust. The main reason I bought my F150 was because it has an aluminum body, no rust!
