+1, suffer the consequences. As for the mom, she will be the one on the news crying saying "he was such a great kid that never did anything wrong" after he has killed an innosent person or family.

drinking is ok, if it is your thing - JUST DO IT AT HOME or get a taxi.

See that around here on the news all the time. The parents crying that their son was such a "good boy"...
Although they usually have an arrest record a mile long for drugs, drinking, robbery and everything else you could imagine.
What the heck are wrong with parents now days?

Re: Truck crash in my yard

That whole situation just sounds sad to me. The kid knows he's f'd and his father will be pissed so calls his uncle who tries to convince you to let him off the hook and the mother has the nerve to blame you when it's her son's poor choices that were the root problem. There can hardly be any question about whether you did the right thing or not because not calling the cops would have effectively made you an accessory to either a misdemeanor or a felony depending on how many times this has happened. Just because someone drives home drunk and manages not to hit anything (or anyone) doesn't make it any less of a crime, it's just one they got away with. For me though, the fact that more than one of the 'adults' tried to pass it off as an 'acceptable' drunk driving accident because there was minimal damage an no loss of life is more offensive to me than the fact that a drunk kid was behind the wheel. By that line of reasoning there only needs to be consequences when something too horrible to cover up happens. That you even had to deal with adult enablers who went so far as to give you crap for doing the right thing (and coincidentally following the law) is truly sad. Maybe it's strike 2 for him, which is a felony in most states. Regardless he now gets to answer 'Yes' on every job application that asks him if he's ever been arrested.

The thing you should have done was TO FIRST CALL THE COPS THE MINUTE YOU Saw THERE HAS BEEN AN ACCIDENT. Then all this begging for you not to call as if you had total control over it would not have happened..

Well done. As for ruining his life-- you probably just saved someone elses. There's nothing worse than spoiled, D-Bag kids.

Yep, who cares about HIS life, he obviously is driving over the limit, not giving a flying hump about anyone else on the road. Pure selfishness.

The dad seems to be henpecked and pressured by the uncles. Good on ya Phil, you've actually done the wayward kid a favor, perhaps he may yet come to realize his good fortune.

Thank God you wife was not standing there admiring her prize palm at the moment the drunk son came barreling through your yard and crashed into the palm . Should point that scenario out to the kids mother if she ever gives you crap about ruining the kids life. Geeze.

You did the right thing in spades Phil.;)
That said... I hate to tell everyone that the relationship between that guy and his mom is pretty average these days. I don't meet too many moms (or dads...to a lesser degree) that aren't pretty certain that the sun doesn't shine out their kids backsides....and don't cover their little behinds as soon as things go south with their kids in a situation.
I'm not saying it's right....I just saying it's now the status quo.
My two bits.

Re: Truck crash in my yard

MY parents neighborhood house,my childhood home, had speed Humps installed several years ago by the town. speed limit is 25mph.bottom of a hill slight turn.an apartment complex down the street has recently turned into a preferred location for people who to like to drink and drive frequently. esp. on the weekends.as cars come too fast down the street and hit the speed hummps, they are about 10' or so across.the car becomes slightly airborn when they need to be turning.his mailbox has been replaced at least 10 times.after the 3rd or 4th time he had several large 5/6'long rocks added to his landscaping.ive had to move the rocks back into their defensive positions 3 or 4 times.Dad calls "I need you to come move these rocks again"!!but it does seem to have lessened these incidents.several DUIs have occured after these events.one guy drove his busted car to his apt.and coverd it w a tarp.the police followed the skid mark from his mangled front right tire and fluids leaking and arrested that guy.I was worried about his liability at first but he said the police said some people have brick or stone landscaping walls or mailboxes and no one should be going fast enough to hurt or kill themselves or others on our street. If they are ,it will be evident afterward and they will be the liable ones.drunk drivers kill innocent people every day.they should all be stopped at all times.the penalties are severe for very good reason.hopefully this was a lesson learned by the young man, even if it was a hard one,It could have been alot worse.MOM ought to know that more than anyone and Id be suprised if she doesnt oppalagize to you soon for her actions/comments.

Re: Truck crash in my yard

Update:
Good to hear your replies, especially as I had a very restless night wondering if I had done the right thing.
Got to amend some facts... Anita's Pony Tail was only 4' across at the base, and 1' thru the trunk.

Just had mother call in. Long uncomfortable discussion, saying boy couldn't get reception to ring her, and we didn't let her know if he was ok. They didn't know where the accident was and spent 45 minutes looking.

Facts are.
He couldn't get reception.
Anita took him to the house phone and # he rang was engaged.
She kept asking him for a # and he kept giving her his own mobile.
Later she pressed re-dial and got the Uncle, told him where we were, that he was ok, and we had rung the cops.
Uncle wanted me to cancel cops so I hung up.
Uncle advised parents but said, 'just around the corner'.
Boy got reception and was talking to someone, for maybe 10 minutes and it finished "oh shxt, here they come now, I'm gone, I'm gone" (cops arriving).

kid wanted uncle (mothers brother) to come around with his F250 and tow him out, and Uncle wasn't having it when he knew cops were coming. They had been drinking together!!

Mother is devastated...on the School Board (Haydens School)... fosters kids...pillar of society, frantic with excuses for him, won't listen, talks over the top of you, cries; goes on and on.

Anyway, boy and his mate repaired fence and all looks good, except the missing hedge is not a good look.

Here are some happy snaps....the front showing my hedge, 120m long, all propagated and grown by me (maybe 8 yrs). It is yellow....very proud of it.

There's the hole. Looks pretty innocent except my hedge is shagged for a few years.

There is Anita's Pony Tail Palm. He rolled it right over. Broken off top to side. To buy that would be $2.5k+ plus crane and trucking. When you get them right, they are spectacular.
(We have grown a brilliant bottle tree...got 3 in all, but one is above-and-beyond.)

Now it is all tidy, it is just a big blank area.
Pity, I liked my hedge. Bit of a landmark around here.
All good.
Cheers
Phillip

Re: Truck crash in my yard

How ironic is this.
As I said, got little sleep that night, and up at 5.30am for the pick and pack.
When in bed last night, I apparently started to snore so Anita went up to the front room.

At 2.25am, she was woken by a screeching of tires, revving engine and a big crash.
Sat on the bed looking out the window, wondering, do I go or just leave them, then up the road crawled a hurt car, went around the corner and stopped. Then a few minutes later, back it came, obviously to find some item like a rear view mirror etc, then off, really slow again.

This morning when she left for golf, up the road, 70m, is a wheelie bin over, rubbish everywhere.
So they raced down from the hill, lost it, a 180 across other side of road and got the bin.
I'll put money on it, they were young, going too fast, and been drinking.

I never heard a thing!!

Cheers
Phillip
