Hey guys I did a car coil conversion and got the motor to run and it did run great 3 weeks ago however i have let it sit so i can paint the boat and re did the inside.. today i decided its ready to hit the water... and i headed out to the lake.. the recommend oil mix is 50:1 so i got 4 gallon of gas and mixed 200 ml right? I let the boat into the water and pump it with gas.. turn the key and it start for 5 sec and fall flat on its face.. and then nothing.. would turn over, good spark but no start.. have fuel cause i can smell it.. I did not re timed since it runs so good last time.. could it be timing problem?... points problem? .10gap? help me guys

oh yea its a 1968 johnson 55hp TRL-10s

Re: Troubleshooting time...

You're mixing imperial and metric but 200 ml's is for 10 litres which is 2 and a bit gallons so I think you need around 400 ml's.

Thanks for clearing that up for me.. i was kinda confused... Ok i just found out another possible problem... I pulled the plug and it is Champion L76V, may be the wrong plug i looked up on the internet and it seem that i need Champion QL77JC4..

I use a car ignition, I connect the points to the negative side with a condenser on the coil and a hot line from the switch to a resistor and from the resistor to the positive side on the coil... A fellow from the this forum with out of his way to sent me a step by step instruction and he also mention i need to gap my spark plug at .35.. That just hit me .. My spark plug l76v is flat and you can't gap it, mean one thing. WRONG SPARK PLUG... The guy I got the boat from is making my project harder everything day.. the guy messed this boat all up.. but i'm thinking positive with the help from this forum I WILL GET IT DONE !!!!:D

Re: Troubleshooting time...

normal point gap is .020 Did you use coil and condenser set, like a .25microfarad cap and a Ford coil? I always thought that was best.

Those surface gap plugs may need more voltage than the 20KVolts points and coil can provide. Try the conventional plug. Does that motor list a J4C plug? They were standard in Johnnyrudes for a long time.

yup jc4 plug is what i need.. the previous owner installed the wrong plug.. I have a 12v coil with condenser and resistor.. I will gap it at .20 first like you recommend see how it does then move to .35..

Re: Troubleshooting time...

Point gap is .020. Plug gap is .030

I would first run w/o the resistor until you get ign system working. Resistor is just to slow down burning of points. If resister drops voltage too much you will have an ign issue. Also, resistor is usually bypassed when cranking the motor with starter. This allows for better spark for starting.

Re: Troubleshooting time...

ok folks good news boat is running good .. however since the motor have no tell tale i hate to have it running more than a minute... i bought a water kit for the impeller but it didn't work out too well water just shot out of it.. so i have two buddy with two stick pushing it together so its air tight and flip the motor on it idle good but no tell tale just couple small beam of water coming out of those little holes on the side.. with the right spark plug now the motor runs really good.. i gaped it .35... the problem was me being a noob when i repair the throttle cable on the shift box i bent the shift switch forward and the thing was in gear trying to start... can you guys tell me how i can check that my impeller is working right? those small holes are making me kinda nervous because i'm afraid my water pump is leaking.... or is it normal?

Re: Troubleshooting time...

I'd stick it in a 55 gal drum or a large enough trash can (assuming putting it in the water isn't an option)

Re: Troubleshooting time...

You should have had 303 ml of oil to 4 gal US of gas to have 50:1 mixture.
