I have a 69 merc 650 with "lightning energizer" ignition.
It ran very well till after a long run the other day. After stopping then sitting at idle for a bit, it would no longer accelerate the boat past 7 MPH, WOT.
Compression is 120# and equal on all 4 cyl. motor starts easily and idles smoothly, does not miss or sputter. there appears to be spark on all 4 cyl running on muffs, pulling any plug wire causes engine to slow down. New plugs, Carbs rebuilt and fuel pumps rebuilt. Could this be a problem with the ignition driver? My Clymer manual does not have much info on this type of ignition. Is there a way to test any of it?
Does this even sound like it could be and ignition problem?
On muffs it sounds like it will rev OK but not in gear in the water?
