I had somewhat similar problems with my 8HP Honda - tough to start, having throttle higher helped start, wouldn't idle (stalled when throttled down) and would only stay running when put in gear if throttle was too high for my comfort.
I removed carb and cleaned it. Problem appeared to have been clogged low speed jet. On Honda BF8A, the low speed jet can be removed without taking carb off motor. I have no idea about your motor, but if it can, this might be an easy thing to try and just might fix it. Note that the problem may recur, and you may then have to repeat this (as I did, but it is easy to do).
I am not a mechanic, but am probably "mechanically inclined" (and cheap). I did invest in the factory service manual, so I'm not that cheap.
