Well got it all cleaned up ,good as new ,then when i was getting ready to put it together ,dropped the bottom of the starter on the garage floor ,and it broke into 3 pieces ,dang pot metal ,guess i will try to find a used one ,cant afford a new one now

Mark, Does that brake cleaner disolve varnish, like carb cleaner does? If so it will ruin the starter.

Nope. I use it specifically to clean grease off things that are painted or sensitive that I wouldn't dare use Berryman's Chem tool on. That's why I like it for grease cleanup or pre painting degreasing...not to be confused with Engine Gunk...totally different product and you have to be selective in what brand of brake cleaner you use (Gunk brand brake cleaner is not one of them) to get the one that has a high velocity spray with a very mild solvent that evaporates in a minute or so and doesn't attack paint or sealing surfaces. Wally World house brand works fine in the blue can with the red label, or the type commonly sold by Auto Zone and is usually on sale sitting out in the floor. If in doubt, take a can and spray your finger with it. If it evaporates in a minute, leaves no oily residue, and doesn't burn your hand, you have the right critter.

It may be plastic/graphite composite. They warn you to not strike it and obviously accidentally dropping on the floor is a "strike".........buttttt good side is that you may have eliminated your problem....that is if your new to you purchase is a functioning unit.
