Trouble reinstalling lower unit

I know you guys answer this question all the time but how do align the shafts when reinstalling the lower unit? I'm losing my mind!
I'll answer the obvious:
-I had the controls in forward when I dropped the LU
-I manually put the LU in forward before reinstall
-the shifter connection from upper is not stuck
-the water tube is not the issue
-I've tried shifting controls
-I've turned the prop
I'm sure that I can't see the forest for the tree's but I'm at a loss.
any help given is much appreciated.
I'm gonna try drinking.

The recommended procedure is to pull the entire drive -- If the lower unit has been separated while the upper is still on the boat its going to be difficult to reassemble without issues.
