Hey guys,

I have a '86 70hp Evinrude VRO that has given me little problems. The past two times I have put in however, it has had some trouble cranking. I'll try it a couple more times and it still won't turn over. This has resulted in the motor flooding, with visible gasoline outputs in the water. Both time I took the cover off and waited for about 10-15 minutes and it started right up after that. It also started and ran fine the entire time I was out there after that.

Guy at the ramp suggested plugs, which haven't been changed since I have owned the boat (2 years). Is that what you think it is, and if so, I assume this is a relatively easy replacement for me to make?

Thanks for any information that would be helpful, as you may be able to tell--first boat.

Re: trouble cranking and flood

New plugs would probably help slug.

Welcome to iboats!

With the amound of gas you say is laying around after one of these "events", I would think your over priming the engine at start up. Check your primer solenoid on the engine. There is a red lever on it. It should be pointing toward the bottom of the solenoid.

When you cold start.....You should.....pump up the primer bulb till firm, raise the cold start lever, turn the key to "ON", push in on the key to prime and at the same time turn the switch to "START". If all is good on the engine, it should crank a few revs and either "kick" or start. If it kicks, don't prime it anymore. See if it will start with out pushing in on the key.
